need formula for building a box for sub
i have single cab truck and i got an 12 inch sub and i wont it to sound right and ive heard theres a formula u half to go buy i found it one time on the computer but i cant find so i was hoping maybe someone would know it.i cant have too big of a box i was wonting to try and get it to where it would fit and it would have alott of boom power.
No you don't need to buy a formula. Just figure out what the manufacture recommends for your sub, and design a box to match.
Ok before I go any farther one cubic foot it 1728 cubic inches. Keep that in mind for later.
Say the manufacture recommends one cubic ft, and the subs displacement is .02 cubic foot . So you need a total of 1.02 cubic foot or 1764 cubic inches.
Say the inside diameter of your box is 14 inches tall, 9 inches deep and 14 inches wide. So thats 1764 or 1.02 cubic feet.
Its pretty simple really. Take the inside diameter of your box, multiply it all together, and divide by 1728.
Just remember if the box isn't square (say the front is angled) add the top and bottom depths together and divide by two. That will give you your averaged depth.

Yup all of your Sony subs will perform well (for what they are) in a small sealed enclosure... Just try and remember that you don't have a 1200w rms sub (that's the max rating) and 1200w rms would blow that thing in a matter of minutes if not less... Give it a good 300w rms and you'll be fine.smoker wrote:sony xplod 12 huh? just do 1.25 sealed until

alright so would an 18 inch box all the way around be fine then i figured with it bein an 12 inch sub ive got 18 inches going up and down and from the seat to back wall i have atleast 10 inches and half.if anyone happens to know a perfect size box that would fix that let me know.so it would sound better in a sealed box i didnt know if it would sound better in a ported or sealed ive only got an 222 watt amp sony xplod.so what would be the biggest sony xplod amp i could put on it.i know someone said to put 300w rms to it.but alright ill go with a small box and as soon as someone gets back to this one ill try and go bulid hope everything goes well. thanx brent
While normally I would suggest building your own box, with this sub you could easily get away with going the cheap way out and buying a prefab sealed box and then just glass up the inside a little for added stabilty.
Most of your prefabs are going to be in the 18"Wx 14"Hx 9"-15"D(top-base) range and from what you're describing, that sounds like it would fit.
Also I mentioned 300wrms as a ballpark since most sony subs can't take to much more than that... for a more accuracy, tell us what model sub it is specifically and the same with your amp, so we can tell you exactly if and what else you can do.
