You are always better off to make them if you have the ability, as aftermarket speaker adapters are usually very flimsy and kinda a one size for a bunch of applications.
And Yeah, MDF is a great thing to use for building them... If you wanna get really into it... build them up and in (directional) and you can even glass/ paint or carpet ;)

where would i find the correct adapter to install 5-1/4 components in a 96 grand-am in the doors, they call for 4x6's ? or should i make them?would mdf be ok?

Although you may want to rethink amping the rear stage speakers and concentrate on the front stage... think about getting an adapter plate for the 4x6" to 5.25 and throw in a good set of coaxials or even better components and amp them... then you will not be overwhelmed by music from behind. Just my 2 cents :)

you will be fine, but with a good amp, them speakers will perform better, give you better overall sound and clarity.. your best bet is a 4channel amp that does around 50-100rms x 4.
