Do you have another open IDE port on the mobo? I'd try another IDE cable and making that 80 gig the master on that one.

Make sure the drive doesn't have a pin/jumper configuration taht actually locks the drive. I hate the "guides" on some hard drives, they don't give you a frame of reference and you can't tell up from down!

The "save hardware config" thing is probably windows just rewriting the boot sector on the drive. I would definately do that and try to at least boot into the other drive. If I remember right, the command for rewriting the boot sector in the XP disc repair "fix mbr" (mbr stands for master boot record). I would try that on the drive you are trying to get those files off. Make sure the new drive isn't connected.

its 2 seperate NTFS drives, the smaller (that i boot from) is the master, the larger with the access denied problem is the slave... i've got all that set up right. The POST screen is fine.

I'm more concerned with getting the files off the larger drive... i need to get around the access denied shat. Also my father brought this up- could i use the "save hardware config" option and load it onto the other drive, and then boot up with the other drive to recover those files? would that work?

PC specs:
basic ass case, 320w PSU
ASRock mobo (unsure of exact model)
AMD Athlon XP 3200+ CPU
512MB Ram
60GB maxtor, primary master boot drive
80GB maxtor, secondary slave, not boot drive, thats the one with the issue.
some cheap geforce card.. it owrks.

we may buy a whole new pc for christmas though. I'd start building it now, but i want to get the lights behind my dash going first.

What do you have (I'm talking everything here :) )?

As long as FAT32 and NTFS are on different hard drives, XP will be totally fine with it. It is a bad idea to use two different file systems on the same drive in different partitions.

As for your boot problem, is it showing the POST screen? If it is not, then reset your CMOS (can do by taking out the computer battery for a few seconds, but your computer MUST be unplugged!)

Make sure you have the hard drive that you want to boot up set as master and the other as slave.

that battery i belive is called the cmos battery. and my best adivice

jiggle the power cord.

its got nothign to do with the monitor - the computer doesn't boot. i could unplug the monitor on a system taht i know works and it'll still boot.

anyway, i'm not tryign to isntall windows on 2 seperate hard drives.. i ahve windows installed on one, and i have windows installed on a another hard drive that i pulled from another comp, and i need to get some files off that 2nd one so i can erase it and keep it.

I did not read all of this thread but I got the jist of it right off of the bat...Try checking the little battery on the board...That battery is like a memory for you pc.It tells pc what stuff to start first so it can boot....If you have noticed that the time was running off then this is why....If not this check to make sure the pin settings are correct on the harddrives...One has to be set on secondary and one has to be set on master....Also if I got the point right you are trying to put to 2 windows programs on seperate hard drives which will not work...I hope this info has help you out....Ohhh yeah and check the pins on the ends of the monitor cabales.....If one is crocked the try to straighten it out....This would cause the problem with the screen being viewable

by Darthness » Sun Nov 26, 2006 8:24 pm

yeah that was the first thing i tried.

Interesting, but unless you were pretty sophisticated with how you had set up those "NT" user accounts on your machine there, there should be nothing prohibiting you from accessing those files - are they in a shared folder assocated explicitly with that particular NT user? That's the only way I could see them being denied.

While I sure don't know the answer, if it is related to the NT user like you say, I'd be willing to bet my left testicle that there's some hacker tool out there that could scan your file structure, and identify both the NT user name and password that you need to use to access those files... and it may be as simple as setting up an account with that same user name on your new machine and trying to get to them again - password may not even be an issue. Have you tried that?

by Darthness » Sun Nov 26, 2006 7:39 pm

i belive both hardd drives are NTFS

its 2 seperate hard drives - i belive the problem is that the files i'm trying to access are being denied because there is a password on the account associated with the files... let me explain a little..

I pulled this hard drive out of an older computer with XP installed - i had a password on my account on that computer. I put that harddrive in this other computer to transfer the fiels over, and then i plan on formating it and using it.. but the problem is i'm getting "access denied" when i try and access the files i need on the hard drive... i think thats a little clearer..the rest of that hard drive is accessable

Darthness wrote:Okay, this issue may not be fixed but we are now in windows, evrythings fine right now. both drives work. although i have one big problem:

On the 80gig drive,, it has windows installed. and i have files over there that i need, but unfortunently, i do not know how to get those files off that drive because when i double click on the folder they're in on that drive, i get access denied/ wtf? i can access the rest of the harddrive though
I'm not sure on your original problem...
And I'm not sure about this problem either, but I'd suspect that it's the difference between FAT and NTFS. Do you recall how you originally formatted that hard drive? Do you recall now you formatted that hard drive currently?

It really sounds like that is the problem, even though I had thought that XP can "read" both file structures.

On the other hand, it wasn't really clear whether the files you can't access are on a different partition of that hard drive, or whether everything on that hard drive is on the same partition - if it's all one partition, then it's not the file structure for sure.
