for 12" subs you want at least 4" ID ports, or slot vents.
use whatever amps you like. I used mine because I like old Orion stuff and they are strong class AB amps.
Mine are delivering ~1280wRMS @ 14.4VDC at full output and do nicely. 1000 watts should do well. I wouldn't use any less though.

single or separate boxes, that's your call.

I'm not sure if it will be of any help, but go to http://www.reaudio.com and load the highbandwidth version, the have encloser designs on there that will help you get started, i started with there specs and did a little modification and my RE's sound great.

hey kiki, do you think that I should try to get him to get some of "The Beast" amps liek you have, like off of ebay, or should he go with like orion or arc audio amps....also, will around 1000watts do the deed for the power needed to really make them bump, or will more juice be needed?
also, what size ports does he need? I could really use a shove in the right direction in that, since i know very, very little about ported boxes, all that port area and stuff really doesn't click with me, and the t-s parameters are greek to me, so those calcs dont really help...
would you go with two seperate enclosures and an amp rack in between or something like that, or go with one single box with dual ports and subs?
also, I believe that I saw somewhere that the ports should face upwards under the deck of the hatchback, and the subs themselves face backwards. am I mistaken, or does that sound about right?

in ported enclosures the two RE XXX subs will get as loud as he'll ever need in a hatchback for a driver.. unless he wants to compete seriously in SPL events and forget SQ entirely. Keep in mind though, a CVR needs ~300wRMS each. a XXX needs at least 1Kw each.
The 12" XXX has 32mm Xmax. I'm not sure on the newer CVR, I haven't looked to see if it's changed.

It really does depend on what he's after though. I use two RE XXX subs and I like them quite a bit.

I have been thinkin about what would be the best for him overall, and I came to the conclusion that he should get:
2-RE XXX 12" subs ($430 ea.)
2-ARC Audio 1500 XXK Amps ($650 ea.)
1-ARC Audio 2050 XXK Amp ($250)
1-Alpine HU, I am thinkin' CDA-9830 or CDA-9833 ($300 or less)
1-Set of CDT 6.5 Component set ($150 set)
$2860 total, big chunk of change, but if he will swallow it, he can bump a ton, am I right??

i think those 2 12 xxx's COULD get as loud as the 4 kickers, xxx have huge spl capabilites and the cvrs just have moderate spl capabilities, i would do the 2 xxx give them around a 1000 rms each give or take(i got 800 on my 12 and damn that thing gets loud) and since youre going for loud definently to ported, 2.5 each 5.0 total tunned to 30 hz and i guareentee you that that guy WILL NOT be able to stand it(image if you threw 1600 to each :surprised ) i rather do 2 top of the line subs than 4 mid line subs.

my friend has quite a bit of money to spend...he is the manager where I work at, so he aint short of cash, except for the fact that he has to pay off his street reacing tickets and pay court fines for that...but he makes good money, and wants a real kick-butt system...

he is going for high SPL, but I think that he would be happier with something like some XXX's of Ti's...since they will still get loud, and yet have great SQ as well..

let me put it this way...for $1500 to start off with, what system would you buy, shooting for a high SPL/SQ setup??
he needs a head unit and some subs and amp(s) to power them...I believe that he also needs some component speakers, and I pointed him towards the $150 on sale not too long ago CDT 6.5's. He told me that budget just as a starting point, mainly because he wanted to spend some money on LCD screens as well, but I think that that idea phased out rather quickly...

It all depends on what he wants in a stereo, how much room he has, and how much money he has to spend. In a hatch it may be hard to fit 4 12's in a big ol' box. Sure the XXX's may not be louder than the cvr's, but im sure the XXX's will have better sq. Just my $.02.

ridr4lif wrote:It all depends on what kind of stereo he is looking for. With any of the aforementioned stereos he WILL need to upgrade his electrical system. The kickers will get loud, and im sure the 2 12" XXX's will be just as loud and probably sound better.

If you want to find out what set up has more "potential", Ryan from Ohio made a thread about this a week or 2 ago in the FAQ section. Keep in mind this is only a baseline measurement. It all depends on box type and specs.

I'm not sure the XXX's would be as loud..You've got double the cone area with the cvr's and i'm not sure the xmax of the xxx's is enough to make up for double the cone area. However, the xxx's would sound damn good. Expensive too though.

by audiofreak12 » Thu Mar 17, 2005 12:13 pm

RE would be my decision, there just as cheap as the CVR's, and IMO, the SQ is better. There dirt cheap too...
