Mass air sensor?
On a lot of the pre 1996 cars, you can still check the codes by using a the paper clip trick (odb1). I think there was also a "hybrid" system used on some of the mid 1995 cars that required a special scanner (the paper clip trick won't work, nor will an obd2 scanner.)
Either way, I'd get the codes and fix the problem...
Sometimes you have to sit people down and talk to them like they're stupid... Tell her that not only is she wasting gas, but she's also probably damaging other parts (sensors, spark plugs, etc.) If she still doesn't listen, wait until the car breaks down and refuse to work on it. After she what a shop charges to fix it, she'll probably want to maintain her sh*t a little better.
I'm not saying your g/f is stupid, so don't take that the wrong way. I'm just saying she probably doesn't understand that sometimes these little problems can lead to big problems if they are ignored.
