I have heard two different stories,
I have heard that distortion, due to amp clipping is what blows speakers
then I have also heard that too much power blows them.
I know a speaker can get too hot, that is why they have a cooling system.
But which is actually worse distortion or too much power??

what blows speakers
To much power, which is also a by product of distortion.
If you have a 1000 watt rms sub hooked to a 25 watt amp, and you clip the ever loving crap out of the amp you not going to blow the sub. (in theory)
Now if you have a 1000 watt amp, and a 1000 watt rms sub, you you clip the amp, your speaker could see way over its rated RMS. That extra power can cause the speaker to blow mechanically, or thermally.

as long as you dont drive the speaker beyond its mechanical limits and the power is clean your good. the advantage to using more power than you need is the ability to never need to push it near clipping. the disadvantage is if you cant tell when a speaker is being pushed too hard you are going to blow it.
that is what I thought pretty much. As long as the power you give the sub is good clean power, it can pretty much handle it.smoker wrote:as long as you dont drive the speaker beyond its mechanical limits and the power is clean your good. the advantage to using more power than you need is the ability to never need to push it near clipping. the disadvantage is if you cant tell when a speaker is being pushed too hard you are going to blow it.

No question... Hands down... Bill Wolf blows speakers
Just having him within 12 ft. of your vehicle for longer than 10 minutes is enough to scare them into submission
