Pioneer Shallow Subs, any good?

Right now I'm looking at buying a pair of these subs to use in my Camaro:

I don't have room for a sub box, but cargodz suggested running shallow subs in the sail panels in this topic:

I can get a pair of those 8" Pioneers for around $170 shipped of eBay. Has anyone ever used them? Are they any good? I'm not looking for crazy bump, just something that's going to sound better than the 6x9's I've got in there now.

i dont think you will need a shallow mount sub if you are going to use an 8 back there. its not like most 8 inchers have 10" mounting depths or anything.

No they don't have to be super shallow, but I can assure you those shallow mounts will fit nearly perfect ;)

well my point on that is that the shallow mounts (pioneers anyway) are not in my experience the most sensitive speaker on the market and since we are already dealing with a restrictive mounting spot something like a kicker comp 8 would be my sub of choice here due to lower power demands and its pretty forgiving with the enclosure, kicker even claims you can run infinite baffle with the comp line

A little bit confused here. Kicker C8 lists 85.6dB sensitivity, Pioneer 8 lists 85.0dB. Is that a big difference, or can I even trust the manufacturer's specs?

BTW, the Kicker C8 claims a 4" mounting depth, which would be a pretty tight fit, but would probably work.

that number is merely a paper spec. ive used the pioneers and the sound quality is ok if you can power them and im just concerned that in the locations you are using that you may be better off with something that requires less power. the kicker sub while having similar specs will in the real world i believe anyway, give you more output. i have powered the pioneer shallow 10s with 500 rms each and it was "ok"...i use the kicker comp 8 as a replacement for a lot of stock subwoofers and it is still noticeably there even on the stock amplifier. now im not telling you that a single kicker 8 on a stock amp is as loud or as good as a pair of pioneer shallow 10s on 1k watts. but the kicker i believe will respond better to less power and it will definitly work better in the location you are using

I'm not saying the Kickers wouldn't work well there, as I'm sure they would, but he may encounter having to build it up a bit to get them to fit right where as the Pioneers should fit the location without as much modification and that's the only reason I believed they would work well for him... Back when we did ours we use MAs and we had to build it up a bit.

Not to hijack, but on that same note, I'm looking to put something in the sail panels of my 89 Camaro with little or no fabrication. I was browsing Memphis' site (http://www.memphiscaraudio.com/), and at the top of the page, new for this year are compact subs. 15-SC10 and 15-SC12, both available in a single or dual 4 ohm voice coil. I think th 10 inch sub might be persuaded to fit in there with a little work. Making an enclosure could be the tricky art though. Not making any decisions yet, but would like some opinions.

The enclosure is the easy part, squirt some expanding foam in there and carve out the size you need then glass over it
