My nephews new whip

Post by cargodz »

My nephew and I just went out today to look at some cars... he wants to start working on/ restoring/ customizing classics, then flip them out for a nice penny...
Here's what he ended up with as a starter... 1950 Merc 4dr (rear suicides)... the body is straight and all metal, has all the chrome (some of it in the trunk), flathead (doesn't run, but all there with extra parts)... Lots of potential for $5,000
And yes I know this thread is nothing without a pic, so here ya go ;)

Looks great. But, out there, how do you find something like that with no rust holes in the fenders and straight body? I used to live out that way and no way could you keep fenders on a car because of Mother Nature and the salt used on the roads to keep her in check. Nice find :thumbsup

Hell of a find there! Chrome looks great, and body has primer does it not? Partial restoration underway already?

Well we lucked out finding it up in Michigan from a dealer that finds old classics in good shape to restore... It was one family owned and up until a few months ago, spent the last 30 years in a barn with a dirt floor, so that saved body.
The dealer that bought it was actually the one that sanded it down (to check for imperfections) and then put primer on it to keep it from getting eat'n up.
Chrome is in really good shape and still has a lot of the really hard to find goodies like the full wrapped chrome tail lights, big rear hood latch/ ornament, lock protectors and original skirts.
Tires however are not new, but were new when it was parked over 30 years ago... and that's why they held up so well.
What we're thinking about for plans so far (we had a lot to talk about for the hour + drive home) is Mild 1" chop so we can keep the original glass intact, maybe a slight rake in the rear window area, keep the original motor (full rebuild) except with the addition of newer radiator and electric fan and powder coat everything we can under the hood, airbags for a lower stance, hide away sound system (nothin to outrageous, probably comps front and rear sub), customize the front grill and bumper, custom roll pan rear, and yes Terry she'll get pipes ;)
She's got a long way to go and ideas are still being bounced around about interior and paint... but heck we still gotta make a second trip up there next week just to pick it up as we didn't have a trailer with us.
