Irritating phone calls

Lately we have been getting these phone calls from 5/3rd bank's collection department... this wouldn't bother me so much if they were for me or one of my employees, but they're not.
They keep asking for an Earl Pearce... and when I say that we have No Earl here, they ask for Kathlene... and again I tell them we have No Kathlene here either, nor ever have.
I have repeatedly asked them to take our number off of the call list since they obviously have the wrong number, but they keep calling and filling up my answering machine...
Now today, they just called and I asked to speak to a supervisor... after about a 15min wait on hold, the supervisor gets on the phone and I start explaining it to him... then the S.O.B. hangs up on me.
So now I finally call the number that shows up on my caller id and I get 5/3rds automated banking, I don't push any buttons and wait about another 15min. for it to put me through to a person... They transfer me to the collections department and I explain the whole thing to them... They have now assured me that they will take our number off the list, but that's what all the others have said, so we'll see...
Sorry for the rant, but I needed to vent as this is really pissing me off... Like I don't have enough of my own past due doctor bills that I'm trying to catch up on and have collections calling for those... Now I'm in collections for somebody I don't even know :angry

This is telephone harassment.

Contact your Police department about it and ask the steps that need to be taken.

Warn them when they call you are pressing harassment... Tell them you will sue if it continues.

They generally get the hint after the first few times.

This happened to me too. Finally my wife told them the people were dead, not just a quick they are dead and then hang up on them, she was on the phone for 10 minutes explaining what happened to them. They have not called back yet.

While the "they're dead" thing is funny... probably not the route I'm gonna take.
And Yeah Ryan, I did warn them that it was harassment and that I was gonna file charges... Guess we'll see if me calling them back did any good... if not, then I am definately calling the police and filing charges.... who knows I might be able to sue them for loss of business, since they keep filling up my answering machine... I'm not one for sueing people for gobs of money, but the bank I'm sure could spare an extra couple thousand dollars :p lol

My family has had plenty of calls like that.

^That is funny :)

And on a high note... went the rest of the day yesterday without them calling, so hopefully they did get the problem fixed finally as they were calling around 2-4 times a day... so we'll see how today goes.

cute but doesn't work. the collection agency will require a certified copy of the death certificate.
I went through this when my father died. every time you have to deal with a bank, or just about anyone really, regarding a death, they demand a copy of the certificate of death.

maybe but then again, collection agencies usually buy the debt at pennies on the dollar (not always that cheap but you get the idea, and technically before someone points out that it is more than "mere pennies" there are 100 pennies in a dollar)and if your willing to go into an explanation to that extent if their investment is low enough it may be cheaper to blow it off than to chase down the truth.

i have had debts cancelled merely by writing them a letter challenging the debt, and believe me it was a legitimate death but rather than put the time into confirming it they just killed it....

lets say the debt was for something like a basic credit card at a retail store whose limits generally start at about 300 bucks and lets assume it has been sold to a collection agency for 50 cents on the dollar, chances are you could settle it for 200 bucks right? well if you didnt pay the original creditor you probably aint paying them either, its too small an amount to seek wage garnishment over so you sell it to another agency for 50 cents on your investment so now they own a 300 dollar debt for 75 and if they will settle for less then chances are you could settle this original debt for like 150 but you call and are told by someone who sounds very serious that they are dead, not only are they dead but this is how they died........that doesnt neccessarily alleviate the debt but it may stop the phone calls which was the original intent of the post.....glass may be correct about alleviating responsibility for a debt but that was not the topic, the topic was getting them to stop calling.....theres a very real chance they have a bad phone number but a good address so mike may never hear from them again....
