okay pretty much understand ported is louder then sealed. but i was wondering when say for example sub a recommends a sealed box between 1 and 2.5 cf would you get more sq from the 1 and more spl from the 2.5? same with ported more sq from the smaller and more spl from the max

it all depends on the subwoofer in my opinion.. For instance my sub would sound horrible in a 4 foot enclosure ported.. But would sound amazing in an 8 cubic foot. And same with sealed. Now thats just an example someone on here can give you a very indepth reasoning. which at the moment dont ask me to do lol

it just depends on the sub, the bigger box would probably make it get louder and hit harder, but you can lose SQ when going with bigger boxes.. some subs sound better in ported boxes than they do in sealed.. and vice versa, it just depends on the sub and box in most cases.

I think Adam might just be catchin on to all this car audio stuff yet :p

As noted before... alot of it is the sub in this case and the parameters of it for the optimum enclosure... if it's designed for sealed... in most cases it will perform better sealed... if it's designed ported it will perform better ported.

And as far as your more sq in a smaller ported box... If the sub recommends sealed then it will probably sound like cr@p in a small ported.

That's also your subjective opinion on it ;) Generally, the sub will play better in a certain type of enclosure (sealed, ported, IB). The volume/tuning frequency will act as the "EQ" for the sub, determining its basic FR.
