on a recent job i was working on an army base and found this speaker box next to a dumpster it was home built and has 2 2 inch port holes for each speaker. i was wondering if i could use 2 2x6 inch ports or if you had to use 4x12. these numbers arent important just there task the question
also this box is 1.66 cubic feet and has holes for 10s any recommendation on subs for it?
it looks like this

Sorry to say that I think I know why they threw it away...
The design from the pic you show doesn't look to good and would probably work better sealed than ported, that and the fact that the subs are facing each other that close together... don't think it will be very effective.
I think they probably tryed something new and it just didn't work out so they pitched it.

could i modify it and make it work? i was thinking of blocking off the ports and trying to make a band pass box out of it or something else who knows?. anyways i was just talking to an old friend of mine who has been making really loud boxes for years and he said the dual ports would work fine that the total volume of the ports is what matters is this true? also the drawing isnt exact the speakers are pretty far apart and the ange on the top is more extreme

put 2 2" ports full lenth from parts express in it. put board over the top and one on the back. and boom sixth order bandpass. and i bet it would sound pretty decent. total volume of the ports doesnt really matter its the volume of the box in correlation to the speakers and the port area.
what do you and your friend consider really loud?

hes made a box that hits 150 db (i dont remember the exact reading) with 2 decware 10s and 500 watts. i consider that pretty loud. hes made louder systems but i dont know exactly what he used i know hes used old carvin loudspeakers and cerwin vegas. basically my goal is to make something that is loud and sounds good (the sounding good part is a more important than the loud)what i have now is pretty good but im looking to upgrade and im kinda cheap i plan on using my tax return and nothing more.

i think so. its been a while he had it in a malibu station wagon if i remember correctly. it would set of car alarms while he drove through parking lots. but now hes all about cerwin vegas. the meter he used was from wal mart. i cant believe they sell those at wal mart now

the only draw back that you would have with that box, as Cargodz mentioned, is cancellation. The two subs nearly facing each other could have a tendency of cancelling out the other subs output.
