Best all around tuning frequency

Hi guys, I was wondering what would be the best tuning frequency if I was looking for about 50/50 SPL/SQ. I listen to mostly RnB/Rap/Hiphop and was looking for a safe tuning frequency that would be loud but still retain good SQ. Would a box tuned to 35 hz be just right for this? Thanks

ive asked this a couple times and seem to get the same answer from everyone, "its up to your ears" but the 35hz would play very well for an sql set up, alot of people go with 32hz for a little more low end. for rap, id have to say go with the lower tuning frequency, my 18 is now at 35hz and i love it, but its an 18 it will play the low notes. What size sub do you ahve anyway?

i would go with 32hz then pretty common tuning frequency are you building your own box or shopping pre fab?

I'm probably going prefab, I think you responded to my thread earlier about buying the 2 prefabbed boxes. Just to remind you, I'm still kinda torn between either getting a 1.5 cubic ft box tuned to 35 hz (for 60.00 pickup), or a 2.0 cubic ft box tuned to 32 hz (70.00 pickup). This is for a single 10" Kicker CVX. I think it was either you, or someone else had mentioned that a 2.0 cubic ft box was too large for a single 10" and may cause the sound quality to become muddied, which is making me lead more towards the 1.5 cubic ft box at the moment.

well your gonna get good output frm the 2.0 at 32hz, and that would be my choice, the 1.5 wont go as deep, and i think thats a big part of good rap bass. The 2.0 32hz should sound damn good and get pretty loud. I remember you were gonna look for a box that was properly tuned to i beleive 38hz? Well for rap i would say thats a bit high of atuning frequency. With a fairly big box of 2.0cubic feet for that sub, it should perform very well. And the lower tuning frequency will bring out a little more of the low end bass then the smaller higher tuned box, and thats not a bad price at 70 dollars if it is what your looking for.

so you think that a 2.0 cubic ft box should be fine for a single 10" CVX? I know it's going a bit over the kicker specs but I'm always seeing everyone putting their subs into oversized boxes nowadays (seems like everyone's putting their single 12" subs into 3.0 cubic ft boxes)

well lol my single twelve i have sittin under the bed is ment for a box that big... over sizing the box will gve you a flatter response, but much mudder response also. They give you the recomendations for a reason. Now going a little over is one thing maybe .25 cubic feet, yeah a little boomier output ok go for it. But adding 1 or 2 cubic feet, that just significantly reduces the power handling capability of the sub and gives a very poor sound quality. Great way to smoke your sub if your powering it properly in the first place. And if you read many of the manufacturers web sites, they tell you a bigger box is flatter response, smaller box has a lump in the Frequency curve, but is generaly a louder box at a couple frequencies. Look at some of the graphs the owners manuals have. If you want to be loud for daily driving give the sub close to the optimum box, if you want to be loud for a comp get a small box tune it to the optimum frequency and burp away for lack of a better way to put it. All in all it comes down to you, if your relatively new at car audio, you may not hear a big difference in the two boxes, if you know what your listening for your be able to tell a difference.

2cf is way to big for a single 10. and putting a sub in a larger box doesnt mean you get a flatter response at all thats all based on the sub's parameters in relation to the enclosure. u don't just get a flat response from a larger box. 1cf sealed maybe 1.25-1.5 cf.
ahh so much to comment on i dont have time for it right now but ill be back u just wait! lol

You guys should model some boxes in WinISD to get the idea of what changing box size does to your sub.
I would assume that manufacturers would give you box size for a .707 Q (flat response).
A larger box (than flat) will make your bottom roll off more steep and will start making a gain right after the roll off. This is all in a sealed box, I'm not familiar with the changes that would happen in a ported or any other type of box, since I've never modelled one.
