I have $70 to spend and I need a decent HU that will allow me to control speaker tones (highs/mids) and my subwoofers seperately. Any suggestions?

I was looking at this one here http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_6972.html

is it decent for the price?

Bryan, I hate to say it, but unless you find something on ebay, or used your not going to get much for 70 bucks.

I would save some cash, say 150 or so, and you will get something 1000 times better.

That's why they make head units with removable face plates. :) Also, on a side note, as Jeremy mentioned, try shopping for a used head unit on ebay. You will probably get your best bang for your buck on there. I have bought a couple head units recently, one being a Clarion dxz745mp pro audio. I picked it up for a 100 bucks. That was a great deal! Just take the time to do some research, to find exactly what will fit your needs, it will be well worth it.

yeah, Definately save your money man, you get what you pay for in the car audio world, and that Performance Tecknique HU is junk.. worse than the really cheap Wal Mart Durabrand HU's...

go here:

i have the Premier 670, and its little brother, the 6700 is on Ebay all the time, its a great HU for the money.. the 6700 has two sets of preouts, front and sub, and has all kinds of other features.. theres a few on that Ebay listing there.. Good Luck!

Theres this old saying, "You get what you pay for". In this case, thats pretty much true. You could probably find a CD or Tape Deck for $70, but the thing is going to be total trash. check out http://www.xceedspeed.com and look under the misc. parts for sale forum, theres always someone on there trying to get rid of a decent radio for around $100. hope this helps

Also, a great place to look for good car audio at ridiculously low prices is at police auctions of stolen property.

I got a Nak CDtuner1 (it was an $850 unit) at a police auction for $50. the most expensive part was buying a new pull-out sleeve/wiring harness for $150.

For controlling the sub-bass separately, try looking at remote sub bass controllers that are part of many electronic crossovers/sub amps.

In one of my installs, I use an a/d/s 642ix constant bass X-over with a remote AC-502 sub bass controller. Using these things makes separate EQ'ing unnecessary. There used to be a whole variety of crossover chips with different X-over frequencies/slopes and modes: band-pass, inverse band-pass, low-pass and high pass. The 642ix is a highly versatile piece--one of he few analog X-overs which can do the inverse band pass configuration, as well as 3-way/4-way formats

For an example: My subs are low-pass filtered @ 63 Hz, 24db/octave; the front components are inverse band passed, receiving the sum of two signals---100Hz and below and 170 Hz and above.

This staggered-crossover minimizes the fundamental resonate frequency area between 100-170Hz, and allows for the perception of frontal bass localization by having the ability to adjust the level of low frequency output of the woofers, while creating a staggered gap to again reduce the resonance from the transfer function of the car's acoustics and increase the front components' clarity, efficiency and power handling.

I've seen a lot of a/d/s 642ix's on ebay for as little as $20. finding a/d/s filter chips could be a problem, although you can make them yourself or have others I know create whatever X-over frequency/slope/frequency range "chips" you want.
