Is there a 1DIN headunit that plays MP3s from DVD?

I was doing some research into 1DIN headunits under $500 that can play MP3s from DVDs and I thought that the DVA-9860 was my hot ticket to MP3 nirvana. That is - until I read the instruction manual. From what I can gather, it seems that the unit only plays DVD-Video (not DVD-Audio, or DVD-Data disks). What's the deal with that? Why would you go through the trouble of making a headunit that can play MP3s and DVDs, but not MP3s on DVDs? Or am I horribly mistaken?

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Also, I noticed a while back (maybe 2 years?) Alpine offered a headunit (9554 IIRC?) that played MP3s from CD, but came with no built-in amplifier. This seems like a pretty neat idea for those SQ fanatics.... does anyone else make something like that these days?

Thanks!

Ok, I just realized that the DVA-9861 does what I want. Unfortunately, it costs $100 more - but still within the price range. I'll bet the cheaper 9860 has everything it needs to play DVD-mp3, but they gimped the unit so they could charge more for those features. Its probably just a firmware update anyways.

I'm still interested in alternatives if anyone has any. Thanks :)

I am pretty sure it is JVC that on their middle to high end HU's they play giga-mp3's which are mp3's recorded on a dvd.

Yup. I dunno what your price range is, but for around $300 you can get yerself a JVC KD-AVX2. Amazing unit, wish I never sold mine.

Whoa, I just checked out JVC's website on these units and they seem REALLY cool with a good price point.

I don't know if its just me... but I had never really equated JVC with good SQ. Is this new line special, or am I mistaken?

Also, where might I be able to pickup an AVX2?
Edit: woofersetc.com has them, and they're right down the street from me. Sweet!

Yes, Justin thanks for the JVC AVX2. I like to look at it and think how cool that will be whenever I actually put into a car. LOL

Sell it back to me! ;)

I thought the SQ on the AVX2 was excellent, built in 7 band eq as well!

Alright, my "system" has a new headunit. Good thing I figured all this out before taking a trip down to woofersetc and picking up all the goods :) So i'm currently at:

JVC-KDAVX2
CDT-Audio ES-610
Audison 2.150
Audison 1.400
Image Dynamics IDMAX12

mmm.... I can't wait.

You won't be disappointed with that JVC... and actually they have been known for good SQ for quite some time, even on their lower lines.
