Hey all,
I had a system all figured out, but I ended up buying Justin's Audison amps so now my setup is changing. To drive the components, I'll be using an LRX 2.150 which puts out 2x80 @ 4ohm and 2x110 @ 2ohm. To get the most out of the amp, i'm going to look into 2 ohm components. Does anyone have any suggestions in the $300 price range?

Edit: Forgot to mention... looking more towards SQ speakers without harsh tweeters.

i have a suggestion..........run it at 4 ohms......i think youll find that 80 at 4 ohms and 110 at 2 ohms is not going to be noticable and i think youll find a greater selection of comps in 4 ohm sets than 2.............

I'd personally keep the amp at 80 watts, 4 ohms.
I have many good reasons for saying that, also!

Mainly (and it's confirmed, given the 2 ohm and 4 ohm power ratings you specified), operating the amp at 2 ohms is really stressing it (if you will), pushing it to its limits, literally - and that leaves you with very little "headroom" to handle dynamic bursts.

And what do you gain for that sacrifice?
25% more power.

What does that gain you in reality, when the relationship between power and loudness is not directly proportional?

Think about this:
It takes nearly a fivefold increase in power to increase the decibel level just enough to double your loudness, when you factor in heat losses like power compression.
If you doubled your power, you would gain less than 3dB.
Increasing your power by 25% would be less than a 1dB gain, and that would be completely inaudible.
Not worth it.

And, that happens to be one good reason why next to nobody makes a 2 ohm component set.

Plus, the amp will run cooler at 4 ohms... inherently has lower distortion specs at higher impedences... and given the very few component sets on the market that have a 2 ohm impedences, you are sacrificing a lot of selection ability, etc, etc.

Good point, I didn't even make the connection that 80 and 110 aren't very far from each other :)

Does anyone have any opinions on the following? I need something that does NOT sound harsh:

You HAVE to use your own ears.

Of what you mention, I wouldn't think about the Diamond audio components. CDT makes nice stuff, but the polyglass set is one of my favorites, particularly "bang for the buck" factor. I haven't ever so much as seen or heard of Helix.

You have to use your own ears - what's harsh to one person is detailed to another. Focal is known for sound quality, not for harshness - and I like a lot of presence - I've had people who have nothing but soft dome and coaxial speaker experience telling me that they sound "harsh". In reality, mine sound realistic - they aren't used to realistic, they are used to a softer, even muffled quality that you get with, say, coaxials.

I'm not saying mine is right and theirs is wrong - preference is like preference in artwork or cars - some people like trucks, some like cars, others like motorcycles.

There's only ONE way to shop for speakers: use YOUR ears.

While you're thinkin about components... see if you can find a Fusion dealer out there (you're too far away from the dealers like me and others on here).
