Polk 6.5 Components laying down

Post by 1BAD4DR »

Whats up all? I keep getting the run arround in the other car forums so I decided to sign up for an audio only forum... I have a problem with my Polk components...It plays great for about 15 seconds and then the highs get quiet like i had just turn the volume down half way...i've been told its the crossover but how do i fix it...replace the crossover? Install blockers of some sort....or does it have to do with the way its tuned....i do like my stuff extremely loud...any help would be much appreciated

It's probably the tweeter protection on the crossover. AKA, turn down the volume or buy a set of components that can handle the power you're sending to them. Could also be because you have the gain set too high, making it clipping, setting off the tweeter protection.

No clue. Try going over all your wiring. Sounds like something might be coming loose and then touching again.

turns out the pop was my dash tweeters...could this problem be headunit related..i've had this pioneer for about 4 years...i've been reading things about preamp voltage....is it possible that i have a very low voltage preout and because that..i've got to crank the gain up to get the sound out of it...i ordered a new pioneer thats suppose to have 5 volt preouts...think it might help?

no, because your amplifier can take an input that's a broad, broad range. What is the minimum input on the amp? Probably about 1/8v to 1/4v.

If anything, having a low preamp voltage will prevent you from clipping your amp - turning your gains down lower than you need to actually is healthier for your system technically - granted you won't be as loud as you are capable of being, but for troubleshooting this eliminates problems, it doesn't create them. ;)

The ONLY benefit of a higher preamp voltage is to work as a band-aid to overcome any induced noise floor - noise induced into your RCA cables.
That's the ONLY benefit. It doesn't make your amp work any less hard, or make it make any more power.

I'm curious what you've been reading about preamp voltage? Lord knows it's one of those topics that's a magnet for, and is riddled with myths and fantasy...

I guess the biggest question here is what amp are you running and which polk 6.5 components, wiring and etc... all this will give all of us a better idea of your overall system and what could be the problem.
If you're getting a popping from the tweets it definately sounds like a crossed or loose wire somewhere.

P.S. Good choice on picking the right car audio forum... stick around and you'll probably learn a lot ;)

In the front doors i have polk db6500's
In the rear I've got 6 x 9 kickers...
i've got the fronts dialin in through an old audio art crossover

so the way its wired would be ....HEAD UNIT to crossover to amp...the speaker wires were ran up to the dash and through the stock wires.....soon i could hear shit out of the components and decided it was time to run new wire for it all...so now it runs straight from the amp to the actual speaker crossover....

the popping in the tweaters turned out to be a different set that i had installed in my dash....and it was because i had the gain up a bit to high...(i was running just those tweets off an old 1000watt sony amp i had lying around...

not that it matters but im also running an american bass class D 1000 watt amp running 2 alpine type r 12's....thanks in advance
