Car Speaker Help

Post by maglincoln »

I have a 2001 Pontiac Sunfire SE and I have just replaced the factory Delco speakers in the rear and front, (I had them installed at Circuit City) still using the factory player. The front speakers are Polk 4x6 DB460 and the rear are Kicker 6x9 3-way 055KS693, With the factory speakers I got the feel of sound all around but no crankability without distortion, with the new speakers the sound is great, but I don't get that feel of sound all around, it seems like the rear speakers over power the fronts, I have the fade on equal balance and if I dial it more to the front I lose some of the punch of the rears. Is there something I need to adjust or is that just normal? I love the way the new speakers sound except for missing the feel of sound all around. Any Help would be appreciated.

THANKS

well, honestly. any pair of 4x6s sound like ass.
and it looks like you got the low line of the polks, and middle line of kickers.
those kickers are probably alot more effiecent than the 4x6s, so thats why they are perceived as being a bit louder.
there is a stupid baffle plate thing in your front speakers, that holds the 4x6s. if you skilled enough, you can take that out, make a plate thing, and fit a 5.25" up there.
and buy the same line of kicker speakers for the fronts.

THe rears simply overpower the fronts.

Simple matter of cone area...

You need bigger fronts or fade from the rears.

In a good setup you shouldnt be able to detect the rear speakers.

That and, get a new cd player. Factory players suck, especially if you try to get any volume out of them. Put in an after market deck, and you will notice a diffrence.

In fact, I sugest a deck to people before I sugest they upgrade their speakers. Sure the speakers will help, but the over all diffrence will be greater with a new deck. Even with factory speakers.

even great speakers are going to sound bad with a dirty signal from a subpar headunit

its a piece of cake to put a set of 6.5 components in the front doors of those cars too......id do a comp set up front with an amp on them and run the 6x9's off the head unit for starters and then definitely look at upgrading the head unit

Amp

Post by maglincoln »

Would it be possible to get amp for the 4x6's in the front that would equal out the sound between the kickers in the back and the polks in the front? And if so, what amp would you recommend.

Thanks

you'd do much better with a 4 channel amp to handle all 4 speakers, and then once you have good clean power to all of them, use the fader to adjust F/R balance to where you like it.
you'll get much better response overall this way.

If you want a strong front stage though, you need to epart with the 4x6s and put 6.5" separates in front in kickpods, like the ones offered by Qform.
Then you'll have a fuller more robust front stage with adequate power from the amp.

Yeah I agree whole heartedly with everybody else... I know you think you did right by buying new 4x6"s and you don't really want to feel like you bought them for nothing, but the truth is that you will never get the quality of sound you're looking for out of them.
