I think it will be good for them to join up. There has been entirely too much competition, and the buyer's product isn't always up to par, so i'm hoping this will fix some of that.

^truth^ BTW like the new avatar.
From what I understood when I saw this on the news was that it was very unlikely it will actually happen, it is something that was talked about, and has been talked about in the past several times.

Actually in case you didn't already know. GM has already teamed up with Toyota and owns a major part of their stock.
Take a look back a couple years at the (GM) Geo/ Chevy Prism and the Toyota Corrolla.... It's the same car with different badging.

Highly doubtful. Today's market is driven by leaner companies that are quick to respond to the market. The last thing needed is even larger companies to have to turn around, they'd only drag each other down with a merger. The best example of what needs to be done is Dodge/Chrysler. Though they merged with Mercedes, in the process they have cut down and have essentially become a leaner company that is much better at perceiving the market and much quicker in developing their offerings.
Toyota, Honda, and Nissan know that they will grow financially weaker over the years. Right now they have the benefit of newer facilities in America, thus fewer retirees to have to support. That will change over the years, but they still have the fortune of being able to learn from Ford and GM's previous mistakes. Nissan still isn't that strong, though. It wasn't that long ago that Nissan was bankrupt. They've turned around also, similar to Dodge's renaissance.
It's just a question of where emphasis will be put and how they will approach it. You can't appeal to everybody, you have to focus on certain market segments and offer a clear advantage over your competition. How you get the most buyers is a question of how well you perceive the market. This is what Dodge and Nissan worked so hard to accomplish, and why they turned around instead of falling off the face of the earth. Obviously Ford and GM know this, look at the F-150, or the Corvette, or the Mustang, Hummer. They're capable of dominating a market and they know how to maintain it in those segments, it's just that their current failures apply to the grocery getters that are such a huge part of the car market.

Thats right. Chevrolet actually sold some of its Vortec rights to Toyota if I am not mistaken.
