good bad and worst lists

Hey guys, There have been so many "best, good, and worst" lists that people have come up with for car audio brands, and so much debate over each one that I decided to work on a plan to answer the question based on peoples experiences.

So Im working on a poll type form webpage that people could visit and put in their $0.02 on what items are quality and which suck.

My first question is, which style of answers is better:
http://www.kannangroup.com/uploads/form1.htm
http://www.kannangroup.com/uploads/form1-1.htm
(dont worry, the layout will probably improve)

The difference is, when we have results at the end, the 1-10 one is more straight forward and I can just give an average value and they are easily compared. The second one, while looking like a better choice at first, has some issues. Say 3 people put "bang for the buck", one person puts Top of the line, and one person puts "flea market"? Should I assign values to each and still average them and see what the final outcome is?

The next problem is mostly only a problem i someone decids to use a bot to screw with the results, but does anyone know how you can limit one response per IP address? Or maybe through cookies (which I know isnt infalliable, but i better than nothing)

Is this a good Idea? Should I see it through?

The only thing I see as a problem is the ongoing problem with online voting on Carstereo.com There are always going to be people bucking the system to get access and screw everything up. I think this is a great idea, but to try and safeguard it seems like a frivolous (sp?) thing.

The one response per IP address can be hacked by using NetZero or other dial up service to dial in and vote. Everytime you dial up, you get a different ip address. So in theory, even an effective IP address counter will be somewhat flawed.

Flea Market can be everything. Hell I saw a 27KX at a flea market a few months ago...if I hadn't smelled the vc I would have bought it. It was only 50 bucks...but with a burned up vc, too much money.

Just put up brand names...let the public decide what is best.

better yet, although more time consuming....have friends post up a "scale from 1-10" on specific brands in a poll on a forum, then take those reports and catalog it like this:

Boss- Rated a 3 from Mycaraudio.com
Audison-Rated a 9 from Bestcarstereo.com
MBQuart-Rated a 5 from Boknowscarstereo.com

that kind of thing.

eventually you not only will get a catalog of ratings, but also could possibly see the preferences between cheap and expensive, limited and mass produced, spl and sq, and how one forum leans toward a favorite brand.

hmm... thanks for the input... seems Ive got more to think about.

I know there is no such thing and true best and worst ect.... and that Im trying to catigorize things that need more detail to catigorize them. I mean some brands have great upper line products and trash lower line products... so how do you rate them?

However, this is being driven by the constant "is the brand good?" questions on forums and "what are good brands?" question on forums.

I gotta think it through a little better.

I like your forum specific suggestion. It would be interesting to see what the differences in brand favoritism is on different forums.

I was thinking of adding a couple of things to the poll at the end where you input what brand you feel has the best "value" in subs, in amps in HU's ect.

I think we should keep the list the way it is but then add on a Poll here on the site to see what the general consensus is but then again not everyone here is a Post Whore like me ;) but u could use both i think that way there is a little more give and some more comparing that a potential buyer could do

One thing I was thinking of doing, but I dont think its good statistical methodology, was to give a password protected url to experienced/knowledgeable forum members at the forums I belong to and when they submit it, it gets weighted more heavily then joe-shmoe's submissions.

Another suggestion i can think of.. is possibly having members in groups like one group could be Maxxsonics, another Kicker, another RE, and so on and son on so that opinions can be shared about a product... obviously if someone is running a Hifonics Amp and a RE Sub, with an Alpine HU then they are in multiple groups... but what it will do is help newer users identify with ppl by what equipment they have... mostly because not everyone here has their equiment listed/up to date... plus Not alot ofppl look at the member profiles anyway

I do cause i have no life

Maybe you could have a page for different categories. Like headunits, amps, speakers, subs, ect... Oh, and maybe have a little comment space so they can leave a message

category: head units
Brand: jvc
Comments: the higher end models are nice decks, the lower ones are OK...

You get what Im saying?
