When a subwoofer has a recommended "box volume" does it take into consideration the space the subwoofer takes up?

I'm getting a new enclosure and I would love for it to be near the recommended volume.

Recommended box volume is total volume after the sub displacement is figured in. (i dno if that makes sense)

Anything recommended compensates for everything (unless noted :) )
