Setting gain on multiple amps, plz help.

Hi,

Im about to install a JL 300/2 and a Kicker kx600.1 from a Pionner Premier deh-p960mp.

The JL 300/2 I set the gain by playing a 1Khz @0db test tone then use a digital voltage meter. But how should I set the gain on the kx600.1 that will be powering my sub???

Should I put the headunit volume to 3/4, set the JL 300/2 using the DVM, then set the gain on the kx600.1 to minimum and increase the gain till the sub distorts, then turn it down slightly???

But with the last step I would use normal music?? Because the 1Khz test tone obviously wont do anything for the sub. JL suggests a 50hz @0db test tone for subs? Should I play this test tone at 3/4 and set the gain just before distortion???

Im a bit stuck guys, anyone please help.

EDIT: just to save you some reading, unless you go to the jl link. unplug your speakers, then measure voltage at the amp. Plus i have a program for creating sine wave's, then they can be burned. its a free program so i could send it to you if you need it. forgot where i d/l'ed it

Thank you.

I worked out 600wrms X 2ohms = 1200, then the sqrt = 34.6.

So I will set the kx600.1 at 34.6 AC voltage using a 50hz test tone at 3/4 volume.

Job done. :)

i got a question about that... since voltage changes... if an amp does 400w at 12 v and 700 at 14.4, which do you calculate for?

for whatever voltage your car averages i guess. are you going to be idleing most of the time? are you going to be sitting somewhere with the car off blasting it? or are you driving down the road listening to it? find a medium somewhere in those areas, of course measure the voltages at each and just make that decision on your own. of course don't set it at 12 volts then turn it all the way up going down the highway, use some moderation :)

Yeah, thanks for you input on this topic JoeyC :)

I'm just gonna do mine with the car at idle.
