House carpet on sub box???

Hi,

I have just read Ryan from Ohio's 'How to cover my box' thread in FAQ.

I'm in England, and am building my first box within the next couple of days. I previously built a 3/4" MDF rear parcel shelf for my speakers, on which I used normal house carpet (ripped off the under lay), it worked a treat!

I want to do this for my sub box, the main reason being I can get a huge roll of house carpet from a discount carpet store at the reasonable price. UNLIKE rip off acoustic carpet, for which I get bugger all.

I'm sure I can make it work! Please someone with experience on this advise me if its possible, also pros & cons, etc.

I think that he means he has to bend over and lube up whenever he buys it.

Depending on the amount needed, i'll either buy automotive carpet from USA or house from here.

ANy more advice from people would have done it with house carpet???

You see, this is why I love being stationed overseas. When I was in Germany we'd hang out with the Brits. Man those were the days. Brits and Ausies are the best.

House carpet is going to be a pain in the butt, but where there's a will, there's a way. If that's what you decide you're going to do, I'm sure you'll make it happen. However, automotive carpet would be much easier.

My dad owns an interior decorating store and I work in a warehouse surronding by carpet, pad, tile, etc, so I deal with it everyday. It will be tough because all most all (with some odd acceptions) carpet will come with a stiff backing, and it isn't made to apply to anything, it's made to stretch, that's how carpet is put down. Anyways it might work if you use some sort of glue, but it wont be as good as automotive carpet or speakerbox carpet. Will be much more durable though !

Cant you try going to a local car audio store to buy some?

I know you guys have some big box stores over there... Our walmarts here actualy carry this carpet now in the automotive section...

the reason we use automotive carpet on boxes is because it stretches and it's strong.
you can work it to fit the shape of a box, whereas floor carpeting has a woven backing that doesn't allow it to be worked in such a way.
It's not going to work very well, or look that great using indoor carpet most likely.

If you want an alternative, bondo and sand down the box so it's smooth, then spray it with fleckstone.
