I have never built a box before & would like a link or article for a good how to (step by step)for beginners pics would be cool. I'm also not real sure on how to determine the proper air space.
On a ported enclosure what does tuned to 30hz or 43hz mean & how is it done.

Would a ported enclosure be too difficult for my first box?

I dont know of any sites that guide you through building a box, but it is very simple.

For determining air space, go to http://www.bcae1.com and scroll down to i think article 110. It is a box calculator and i think gives the cut sizes of each board.

As for doing a ported box for your first, it might be risky. Unless you are really good at woodworking. You need to make sure that the port is exactly the right length, otherwise damage to the sub could occur.

As for tuning to 30 hz as opposed to 43 hz. 30 hz is a lower frequency, mostly found in rap/hip-hop. 43 is a slightly higher frequency. When a ported box is tuned to a certain frequency, it is usually loudest at or around that frequency. So a box tuned to 43 hz, it will be loudest around the 40hz range.
If you can look at some charts, you could see what im talking about.

IMO, build a nice sealed box first. Then if you want louder, you can try to build a ported.
Ported = Loud
Sealed = Sound quality

I am thinking of getting either Kicker 2 L7 or L5 12" maybe 10" square subs I hear good things about them!

You must of not heard any of the bad things about them. They get loud yes, sound like crap, and are as reliable as crap. If you are lookin for purely SPL, then the square subs will work. I would still stay clear from them. I'm sure those are about 200-250 each(l5) and like 300-350(L7) if you are gonna spend that much I wouldn't go with the square design. If you want to go with kicker, stick with the CVR line.

Oh there is an RE group buy going on over at soundillusions.net starts Dec 5th to the 30th I think. Go that way and save some bones.

Obviously you must be reading other boards... No good mention for Kicker Square subs on this board...

no no no kicker kicker square subs are not good there to damn expensive and there not that damn good. elevation pro subs are far superior imo sure there loud but not much else and they carry a decent bling factor with them...

thats the fourm for the RE audio group buy. Some on here could hook you up with some elevation stuff too, if you want to go that way.

Take it from me. I have had many kicker L7's. The only reason i have had many is because i have sent many back for warranty. The one i have in my truck right now, i had to solder the tinsel lead back in place. They are good subs if you want a very loud sub that doesnt last long.

Stick with a round shaped sub. You will be happier.
