HU on and off on and off

for some reason while i was driving around today my HU just began to turn on and off uncontrollably, as if it were having a seizure. i checked in back of it to make sure no wires are loose. no amps connected to it, just the HU, antenna wire and the wire harness. dont know where my ground is or if it is even that. any ideas?

Sounds like a possible ground wire problem.

Is it an old HU?

Check the pins on the faceplate and on the deck itself, if they are dirty and not making a good contact this can happen.

no, its a relatively new HU(Pioneer DEH-P5500MP). i will try and see if it is the pins that are dirty.

is there any way to find out online where my ground is? i have a 1993 camry

Just try looking behind the the head unit and find a black wire that is screwed into some metal of the car.

coming from the HU itself? there is none. i did a ghetto self-install.. didnt even get a new DIN

but i never had this problem before. should i have had a ground wire come with the HU and do it myself?

i had this problem once in one of my vehicles. It was my battery dying bc my alternator couldnt handle my amp. So maybe u should check that out...
