so i have this free 8" RF HE punch ported sub running at 2ohms getting 300 watts from my mono xtant amp and it just doesnt seem to hit very hard. i would imagine 300 watts i would be able to feel it in my chest at least a little bit, no?
i was wondering if 300 watts with an 8" sub would sound a lot different than lets sat a 12" sub with 300 watts? does bigger cone area=more SPL?(noticeable?)

First of all,
http://www.caraudiocentral.net/forums/s ... .php?t=835
check that out.
How big is that ported box and what frequency is it tuned to? I, personally am not very impressed w/ RF stuff. I had 2 10's sealed and didnt like them.
But a 12" that handles around 300-400 should be a little louder.

Heck yes. 12>8....
More surface area (Sd) usually will yield more SPL

the larger diameter sub will have more cone surface area, and probably more Xmax, so it's going to move more air, but it'll probably require more power to keep good motor control.
Larger subs also tend to have a lower Fs, so you can tune a ported box lower and still have it hit hard. Once you get below the Fs of the driver with a tuned port, you basically lose any advantage to going ported because of the increased power required to achieve the same output level as you'd need to hit that output above the driver's Fs.

I think what you really need to be paying attention to is which sub is in it's correct enclosure. If you put an 8" in the correct enclosure compared to a 12" in a completely wrong enclosure, you're more than likely going to be better off with the 8". Even a POS in the right box can sound ok. Put a $1k sub in a POS box with holes, wrong volume, etc. and it's probably going to sound like crap. Enclosure is the key. Then all that other stuff about Xmas will begin to play a part.
