forgive me for yet another versus threads...but I value your opinion :)
Mainly it's top Pioneer Premeire vs top Alpine...
I am not considering Eclipse, Kenwood, or Clarion
..any experience/feedback is greatly appreciated....
I want SQ and control (EQs, filters, etc...)
thank you

why not considering eclipse ?
and to add to your post, I had a pioneer premiere...good unit till it up and died one day for no reason. Shortly after warrenty. Oh well, it was cool while it lasted. (Love my eclipse %100 more, better sq and eq...which is why I have no idea why its not included...since it will play mp3's etc. It probably has more features for the money then either of the ones you have listed.)

Had both, prefer Pioneer Premier. Don't get me wrong, nothing wrong w/ the Alpine's, i just never liked the cosmetics or how hard it was to navigate through it.

I decided to go with a face off unit. I know there are alternative security measures...but I feel most comfortable being able to detach the face...

Alpine F#1status hands down.
next choice, probably the AVIC-1

If he wants control, though, the Alpine CDA-7990 doesn't offer much. It's pure and simple SQ, if you wanted control you'd need to splurge on the $4k processor to match it. If you're talking a head unit period without external processors and you want more control, the Pioneer offers more.

i love my eclipse 8443 id take it anyday over the regular alpines not the F1's and all the premiers. i also like panasonic MXE decks too but i dont know if you can squeeze all the sq out of it that you need, but they are great decks for the money.

i have a pioneer deh-p5500mp; out of production even though its not that old. i love the control of it. its not as in depth as an eclipse but for a beginner, it gets the job done perfectly. its physically good looking too, especially if u have a car with the ugly green lighting. the HU has green and blue and gives it a hint of stock.

I like Pioneer over Alpine for the simple fact that both are good units, but the Premier line offers a more user friendly unit. In all honesty though, if I were looking for a new unit I wouldn't purchase anything under the 860 from Pioneer because everything else has weak 2v pre outs. My next unit will probably be something from either Kenwood(Excelon) or JVC (Arsenal I believe it is).

I was thinking the new F1status DVD unit, and with the outboard processor of course.
he isn't going to find better control than that, and it's all digital.
