Alright so here's the deal: I have a Rockford Fostgate 300 watt amp hooked up to pioneer 6x9's in my car. I've had this hooked up for 4 years now and never had a problem. A few months ago I noticed that the sound from the 6x9's would cut out and then cut back on. I knew it was going to be a problem but left it until finally it went out and stayed out. I checked the fuses on the amp and CD player(aftermarket Pioneer approx. 6 years old) and everything was fine. Checked the fuse on the power line coming from batt. and it was fine. I have the amp ground wire hooked to the chassis and the remote wire coming from the remote wire on head unit. Now here is the weird part: when the car is off,I get 12.5 volts from the batt. and the remote wire and when I connect the power and ground to the amp, I get 12.5 volts but when I connect the remote wire to the amp, the voltage drops 3 volts at the power wire and remote wire. I took a wire and bridged the power input to the remote wire input on the amp and the amp works for a few minutes, but then the sounds cuts on and off when I adjust the volume on the head unit. I bought a new amp and hooked it up and I got the same results so I'm pretty sure the amp is not bad. I also just changed the remote wire also as well as the RCA cables.

Hmmm
So the voltage drops by 3 volts when the amp comes on? now thats odd.
I woulds tart by adding fresh fuses. You may have one on the way out. Change the one on the battery, before the amp and/or on the amp.

Yeah, when the power and ground are hooked up, it gets 12.5 volts(when car is off) but as soon as I connect the remote wire, the voltage drops.

Sounds like its the head unit then.

Well here is an update: I went and looked at it this morning and I tested both speakers with a 9 volt battery and they work so I know it's not them. Then I disconnected them and the RCA cable from the amp and tried my jumper again but it didn't work this time. Could it possibly be a bad ground wire?

It was the ground wire, must have been loose or something, took it off and put it back on.

hmmm
well glad it was a simple fix.
Whenever I encounter problems I tend to check the fuses first with DMM, replace them next step then redo wiring.
At least it wasnt an expensive ordeal.

X2, good to check the fuses first.
Figured it was a bad ground or power connection.
