hurricane nuts not holding too well

Post by Tim »

As you all may remeber I put up a post of a box I did for a friend. 2 15's big ol honkin box.

well now it seems that some of the hurricane nuts that I used, are not holding to well.

When I installed them in the wood, I used glue to hold them in place and gave it plenty of time to cure. When we installed the speakers in the box the screws broke the nuts loose and he says he can hear the screws and nuts rattling, which you can hear it some.

He wants it fixed, and I really dont know what to do to fix it.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Did you use the nuts with the 3 teeth that dig in?

If so there shouldnt be a problem.

If the screws are backing out you will want some purple retaining loctite.

what kind of nuts and glue did you use?

you have to be careful with any of those nuts. cranking down a screw too far can cause the hold to break.

get any screw cross-threaded in them and you are about guaranteed to mess up the nut.

Get an insert that is larger, like a barbed nut, or threaded insert. Drill your holes a little larger and put the new ones in.

Example, if you used hurricane nuts, get something like one of these the threaded self-tapping inserts here:

yep I used the hurricane nuts from parts-express. and I used loctite super glue to hold them in place. and some of them still came loose.

I know this is a little late to ask but you do install the nuts on the backside of the speaker ring right??

thanks

did you drill the right size hole?

did you put them in carefully using a C Clamp or a long screw and washer?

Pounding them in with a hammer can be bad.

yes back side of the speaker ring...

yep did everything right. Its no biggie though we can redo it.

Yeah the hammer is not the best way to put them by any means. I have also used a C-clamp before and they broke loose on me.

Thanks for the input,

I prefer to use a Forstner bit about 3/4 the depth of the nut and back fill with epoxy.
