So Im sitting here working on that computer today.
I got my normal good computer up and running. I plugged the CAT5 into the older computer my kid was using and ZAP.
My good computer let loose the magic smoke.
WTF man? Does this really happen? I plugged in a cat5 and bam. Just like that.
Im thinking PSU?
Smells like electronics...

That is an odd one. Unless you have a PoE adapter, there is no reason why there would be that much voltage on the network cable.
Just to be clear, the network cable that you plugged into the new PC, the other end was connected to your router?

Yup...
Got any power supplies up there? lol
Im about to order one soon
Maybe it was just an odd coincidence. Also while Im at it is there any way to figure out exactly what size power supply I need? I kinda wonder if mine was a tad on the small side?
It had 16A on 2 12V rails.
I got an Athlon dual core 6400+ standard clock, 4gb PC6400, 1 500 GB sata, 1 DVD drive, MSI NX8800GT vid card PCI x.

These are both eMachines? Which model is it? I can look up the PSU you need online. I might have a match depending on the one you need. Worst case I can get one in a day from a distributor in Indiana.

The one that blew was on my custom built. The one I was plugging in was an older HP.
