how well do you think it would work if i were to mount the tweeters i have now directly in front of the midranges, there is plenty of room between the grill and the speaker, and it will give the tweeter close to an on axis direction?

As in, mount it in the door grill or behind?

That's how I have my tweeters mounted. In the grills. At first, I really hated having gone that route. But now, I don't mind it like that at all.

They sound good to me as well.

If you're willing to cut into the grills and will be happy with them there, I say go for it.

The idea works fine. I've done this before using backstrap or a sheet stock template to mount the tweeter behind a door panel or in a kick pod directly over the dust cap of the mid. It's not unlike what KEF was doing with their Uni-Q KAR-xxx model mobile speakers in the early 1990s. It gives terrific imaging that way if you have the depth to do it.

so if i mount them in the grills in front of the mids would it be best to mount them in the center or higher where the pic shows? and what about running 2 sets of tweeters, like a small 3/4 - 1" set in the sail panels? [just something i'm wondering]

personally, I center them.
If you're looking to run a 3-way setup then just cluster them and don't bother with trying to stack the speakers. a 1" silk dome will end up being a huge tweeter and blocking the mid. I was talking about smaller tweeters, like the little neodymium jobs that come in 2-way component sets.
