Gotta say so far Im liking the subs real well. I got some DJ Billy E and throwed down, they like it pretty good.
I kinda had my doubts about the sound of the fiberglass box, how it would react and just well...sound, but it is good.
I like the subs, they are still not broken in, but they still seem to favor some music more than others. I still got alot of tuning to do, but for now it dont sound bad.

Trying to open discussion here so we can all learn...

Setting gains with a dmm is just as accurate as your ear... imo. we dont set our gains with a DMM anymore. By ear or with a scope. Dmm and ear are both guessing.

Oh ok, since I dont have access to a scope, I guess by ear is what it will be.
thanks for the info.

So you pulled the backing off of that stuff and just stuck it over your entire door like that?
You draped it over the holes and everything?
What was your goal by doing this?
Putting it over the holes in your door did barely anything at all. Before you go using up $50 in product, lets talk about the proper uses for it first...

really?
anyway tim, it looks good man, ive installed in many of those trucks and rarely used a baffle. those instances when i didnt there were no negative side effects. you should be good to go. one thing i do like to do on those silverados is open up the area behind the stock grille a little bit and then wrap the mesh cover with grille cloth.

thanks alot Terry, I appreciate that. I have to say that I am not using a baffle now and it sounds pretty good the way it is.
I feel like it sounds good enough to suit my needs and taste.

No I used the moisture barrier as a template.
You draped it over the holes and everything?
no I cut the holes out, and made provision for the lock rods.
What was your goal by doing this?
Adding mass to the door, thereby reducing the rattle, and deading it out.

Well, the way the door card was made I had to punch out for the holes for the door card to mount back up.

I see that. But i'm talking about the gaping hole in the door sheet metal itself.
Did you do anything to cover that? Or just kind of hang this deadener over it?
The sound deadening really doesn't do anything to attenuate sound waves in air. (its meant to kill vibrations in sheet metal (or other substrates) - and only is effective at certain frequencies). So if its just hanging over that hole like a curtain attached at all edges, its was kind of just wasted in the area that covers the hole.
I'm all about making the most out of what we have. I don't believe in uber-expensive drivers (especially in a car)... But I do think we can improve what we have by doing very little.
You had the drivers, great, I used those drivers for a while in my car. I liked them pretty well too, and just wanted to try something else.
You also had the sound deadening already, I think it could have been put to better use. A little sheet metal/ wood/ plastic/ fiberglass would help attenuate that rear wave to avoid some cancellation (which is distortion).
What you have done works, yes. But to get the most out of what you have, a little extra effort will go a long way. If you really don't give a shit, just let me know and I'll waste my time elsewhere. But if you want to discuss this stuff at all, I'll be glad to continue.
I'm not trying to put you down, and I know that you enjoy your stereo as is. Just challenging you to take that extra step and hear the difference for yourself. You are working hard, and I'm not trying to discount that... Keep it up...
