good start.
for an EQ I'd go audiocontrol DQT.
for crossover points and slopes and attenuation, best is to start with a rough ballpark of where you want them set, then use an RTA to set everything for the best roll off points and transitions from one range to the next.
You'll want to do the same again later with the EQ to smooth it all out.

ok aside from eqs.. What else can i look at in the mean time in the midbass department, I dont know if i want to play guniea pig on JL midbass, when i usually like to avoid JL becuase of the over hyping local dealers, and one up their latest and greatest with something else that i usually dont pay as much for. Is the Extremis good for midbass, i saw a video demo on a pair of them and they seemed to really do a nice job.

That's the problem, you aren't going to find any other dedicated car audio midbasses. Not that large, anyway. Midranges aren't hard to adapt to car use because you're not operating them near their Fs and they don't rely on their suspension as much. With midbasses that's a different story because the design of the driver heavily affects it's performance in it's intended range. This is one area where car audio specific gear is good. Home audio drivers simply aren't designed for IB applications.
Would an Extremis match a JL 8" dedicated midbass in a car door? No. And I say no in faith, but JL would REALLY have to screw up for it not to walk all over an extremis in a car door, just given the displacement advantage and the fact that it will be designed specifically for that purpose where an Extremis is not.
Second, I doubt those midbasses would be too expensive. Probably between $100-200 per at most.

Ok so sit back and wait on the midbass, im expecting these to really do a good job when properly installed emphasis on properly installed. What about the kicker midbass? Is it a weak performer i have heard alot of good about it actually locally. And was wondering how everyone else felt about it. I beleice the are ssmb8s?Jonathan wrote:That's the problem, you aren't going to find any other dedicated car audio midbasses. Not that large, anyway. Those are good, too. Forgot about those, actually.
I'd still wager the JL's as a better dedicated midbass, preliminary specs show them to be deeper drivers (more potential for excursion given the larger frame/motor), plus JL's DMA analysis and overall motor design tends to be much better than that of Kicker, especially their most recent stuff (W7, W6v2, ZR comps, W3v3s, etc.)

ok well actually the man that works at our JL dealer gives me great discounts on their equipment, Memphis batcap jl alpine and a couple other lower brands. He is a great guy does push JL hard, but everyone else that works there tries to hard to sound smart and cant tell the difference between a w7 and there wives play toy... Ok a little vivid but you get the idea. Ill give him a call see if he knows anything about their pricing tomorrow
