Imagine that... :p

Well I got the plug wires on it tonight and dumped the old oil in. She started right up.

It has one nasty cackle to it. It runs SMOOTH but has this cackle noise. No other way to describe it. To me it sounds up front and up high, like in the head. Possibly a broken piston/ring? Maybe a broken spring? Dunno

I am hoping to pull the front valve cover off and check the springs.

do a compression check, that should tell you alot...

You said some of the rockers arms were loose, did you read in a manual on the correct way to adjust them?

It'd be super sweet if it were an easy fix...

I dont have a manual, but according to repair guides on Autozone you tighten them down to 11 Ft Lbs then go 90 degrees past that.

Ive been informed to check the balancer pulley and it might be the flex plate...

You can also remove the belt and eliminate any possiblity of it being one of the belt driven accessories... It'll only take a minute and could save you alot of trouble...

You can use a wooden dowel as a stethoscope and place it on each valve cover and it'll more than likely tell you which side the noise is coming from...

It could just be a lifter ticking, or perhaps a bent push rod???

Like I said, use the dowel (or any type of stick really) and see if you pick up what side its coming from, then pull the plugs on that side and see if any are wet with either water or gas. If so, pull do a compression check on that side, if its good pull the valve cover and unplug the coil pack and have somebody crank the engine while you watch and make sure each rocker is moving...

That should be a good start for you...

Well the cackle is loud... its not a tick...lol

I will pull the belt tonight. Im going to inspect the harmonic balancer also. Then I will pull the front valve cover. From there inspect the flexplate.

I'd pull the plugs and do a compression check... If it doesnt have good compression on all the cyls then you're going to have to tear into the motor or replace it.. Plus, it'll give you chance to check the plugs out, which can also tell you alot....

You should post up a video, it doesnt sound to good... :sad017:

Welp I got under the car this morning. After 1 Hr 20 minutes (I work slow) I got the plugs out and the oil pan off. Oh ya its a spun rod bearing. I dont even think theres a fricking bearing in it- its that loose. I need to find a 7/16" 6 popint socket and some lunch before I continue. At this rate should be done by about dark. Let the silicone setup oer night oil and start tomorrow.

Thats IF I can get the rod bearing in/on through the bottom like I hope. At least this isnt a Split-Pin crankshaft!
