actually the quad core intels run hotter than the AMDs, but they are also loads faster than AMD, and overclock like mad, so it's a trade off. the heat is caused by the power used for the additional computing power.
go Intel. forget company loyalties and go with the best product.
also if you do plan to overclock it to get the best performance, go with good RAM. forget the economy crap and buy the high end stuff with good timing specs. always worth the difference in price. especially if this is going to take months to put together, since by the time you buy everything, it's all going to be obsolete anyway.
