my suggestions for that box:
make the top lip overhang, and put an edge on it, then recess that neon tube up under the recess.
that'll hide the neon and make the light more difuse. You could also line the hidded recess with mirrored vinyl to reflect the neon for more light output.

and most importantly.. cross-brace that box internally. It could use a little more stiffening from the looks of it with that monster XXX in it.
