My counter to this statement:
You mean like the ability to buy a Chevy, Dodge, Ford, or other truck with a diesel engine and now same said trucks with the gasoline option of ethanol. And the ability to get any one of the afore mentioned propellants at many pumping stations world wide.

While I admit the companies themselves are looking for alternatives due to lacking materials, they will not back a solution that does not meet their needs for financial gains.

What about the popularity of diesel fuel throughout the rest of the world?
That being the basis behind my statement... think options my young friend ;)

add on: and try to remember I was around when we had the big gasoline crisis... so I've seen my share of arguements on this subject :D

True... But you are not accounting for what kind of oil as we have the introduction of biodiesel that has become more popular throughout the rest of the world as an alternative and made mostly of vegetable oils.

GM had vehicles in 1980 that could do 100 mpg in a normal, full sized vehicle. Same with the other's in the Big 3.

I mean think about it, back in 1980, a 3/4 ton Chevy pickup is getting pretty damn close to the same gas mileage as today's 3/4 ton Chevy pickup (slightly improved). Doesn't make ANY sense to me, especially when we have the technology to improve the efficiency of these engines.

Yes, the otto cycle is very inefficient, and the diesel cycle is about 20-30% more efficient (thermodynamically speaking). Yet, most cars are still less than 30 mpg on the highway?? There has to be a reason for this, other than the fact of spending money on other fuels.

Speaking of which, anyone on here seen the movie " Who Killed the Electric Car"?

But Diesel/ Biodiesel is different from Gasoline/ Ethanol... and pumping stations worldwide have been able to retrofit for all or a combination of each of the 4 (or 2 types gas/ diesel), not to mention the abilty of differing octanes of unleaded fuel... And the Automotive manufacturers are able to build vehicles with different engine options for each...
So that's what I'm getting at... How hard would it really be to add another option?... Answer: Not as hard as one might expect, given the options that already exist... So the real question being: Why not?... Answer is in the form of a question for producers/ distributors/ automakers: Is there money to be made by doing it or do we stand to lose more than we gain currently?

Something is going to have to change. Oil is running out and a cost effective and efficent source of energy is going to be in great supply the oil companies know this im sure. and all of the fuels you listed can use the current structure thats in place and dont require major modifications.

the challenge is to find something that offers teh same energy co efficents of gasoline and can use the CURRENT infrastructure. ethanol is the fuel of the future in my opinion as it uses renewable resource and can use the current structure.

Look at the new toyota 1 ton diesel they are talking about they are saying 40+ mpg from a 1 ton truck. It would just cost too much for everyone else to retool to use a new technology to achieve this, but toyota is building a new plant and this is part of the plan so it can be done it will just cost too much.
