the point about playing below tuning frequency is that the enclosure no longer has control of the subwwofer at that point and any frequencies below that point are going to make it react as if it is in free air, which, at high volumes will make the sub self-destruct.

almost..

the box maintains decreasing control from the tuning frequency, downward.. complete loss of the acoustical 'spring' provided isn't completely lost until well past 1 octave under tuning..
