Sub Positioning

ok, i manage a glass shop right now and i called my supplier. my COST, not retail, on a 4 x 8 sheet of lexan 3/4" thick is right at 2500 american dollars. if you want 1" its 3500.00
just so there is no confusioin lexan in these thicknesses are considered bullet resistant and im thinkin a little on the side of overkill for car audio.

3/4" plexiglass runs 400 bucks and 1" runs 500.00

keep in mind these are dealer prices from a plastics supplier we have been doing business with for a long while. we are one of the top selling glass shops in northern ky. so i know noone gets a better price than us. 4x8 may seem kinda large but unless you find someone with some cut off laying around thats willing to make a deal on it, when you order something like that you dont have to take it all, but you do have to pay for it.

Is there a way where I can still see the magnets and not have to spend so much?

yea, invert the subs........it will have no effect whatsoever on performance you just need to watch enclosure size because most of the speaker is now outside the box.

my shop is right across from a glass shop and they quoted me on a sheet of lexan 758 plus shipping. they asked why would i need bullet proof and i said i have some big subs. lol but i wonder what the big difference between my lexan and yours?

the issue isn't shock resistance.. it's resistance to resonance.
plexiglass (weaker) and lexan are flexible, which is very bad for speaker enclosures.. the only way to combat enclosure flex is by using thicker materials. I didn't know Lexan had gone up that much. It's been a bit since I priced it since not many people can afford the five grand or more to build a full lexan enclosure.

Your best option for a cheap way to see the magnets is to invert the subs, mounting them magnet side out.

yea, your right kiki. you could use 1/2" plate if there was a good way to secure it and it'd be a hell of a lot cheaper as i can get that cut to size and dont have to order a stock sheet. its a little more that way per square ft. but still cheaper overall.

sinister, i bet if you called them and asked youd probably get a different price this time, the glass industry goes through a price adjustment every quarter and we sometimes see the same job have a price decrease or increase (when dealing with insurance companies as the cash market is pretty stable) as much as 150.00. in this business insurance companies dictate what they are willing to spend and you can decide if you want to do work for them. yea it sucks but thats the way its always been. aside from price adjustments you may get a guy who doesnt understand the pricing and may shoot you the wrong price because he doesnt understand the process to go about getting the price. most glass shops have price books laying around that are old, very old, we have some that go back 30 yrs. we use them as reference because most of our pricing is done online now, not all shops do this yet but most. anyway the books on flat stock can be pretty confusing and if you dont use it everyday its pretty easy to shoot someone a price that is wrong. but hell if he gives you that price take it. just to double check my vendor i am going to call back tommorow and price it again with a different person.

ok called them back to double check and he was a little high on the lexan. 3/4 is 1500 and 1" is 2250 for a 4 x 8 sheet. these are my prices and the reason it has gone up is that they use gas in the manufacturing process.

ya im sure they would have to call in but i just talked to them like 3 days ago and they do quite a bit of plexi/lexan so i think they would want their prices right.

i managed to turn my box around yesterday and test drove it like that for a bit.. it seems with the box facing the cabin, i somehow loose alll my higher-frequency bass as compared to having it facing the other way. that seems really weird to me. filter on the amp is set at 80hz.
