Oh really? Holy crap. It didn't look like it would've had anything else attached.

Better than the other alternative.
I bet hes going to be grounded for some time.
The real question here is why was that balloon in their back yard?

The dad said they don't believe in grounding their kids.
I think they said the dad was a meteorologist (sp) and storm chaser so...
But honestly, I'm almost certain that the balloon would never have been able to lift off with the weight of that kid. When it hit the ground you could really get a perspective of the size once the first guy ran up to grab it. It might have been able to lift an extra 20lbs. but even that would be pushing it.
So shouldn't the dad have figured that out?
I'm no balloon expert though.

I say killem...
Wasted 5minutes of my life and in my dreams of flying with a big silver balloon ...
I'm thinking dropping him from a hot air balloon would be ideal

I was thinking the same thing about the weight.
They have been saying on the news how this family has been on wife swap a couple times, and the kids are allowed to do pretty much anything they want. The family is also a bunch of UFO believers too.
What I want to know, so he was planning on just releasing this thing anyways into the sky? No way to control it, hard to see it from another plane. Just imagine what would happen if it hit a plane?
These people should be fined and also have to pay for all the resources it took locating the kid and the rescue attempts.

For sure.
A question that passed through my mind was... Was this a stunt gone very wrong and is he using his kid as a scapegoat?
Like, did they release it and then figure out... "Oh f***! We just f***ed up something fierce." And then told his kid to go hide. Haha, people are totally capable of that.
It just seems screwed up. Oh well, the investigators weren't born yesterday. If there's more to the storey, they'll find it.
But yeah, if they aren't fined, that gives the green light for anyone to release objects like this into the air.
