I would just be careful going around saying what other people make. There are plenty of jobs out there that would fire you on the spot for repeating people's salaries.
I think you should just accept the $17 per hour for now and wait until the next evaluation. You may get a bigger raise then if you don't push the $18 per hour raise now.

Yes wage transparency in most US companies is non existent.
Obviously if the Boss tells the $18/hr guy "Hey we cant pay you $18/hr as your not really worth it, were going to bump your pay down to $14/hr". I bet that guys gonna tell him where to stick it and quit. I would.
I would push forward requesting whats fair to you. If thats $20/hr so be it. Just dont say "Im worth $20/hr because that guy making $18/hr cant do as much as me". Have solid reasons, like you can do jobs correctly in certain times, or you can do some types of specialty vehicles, etc. Basing your worth off someone who is lesser is a bad move. Always compare yourself to someone better. So Jim Bob might make $25/hr and Im not quite to his level, but I would like $20/hr. Thats the best approach Ive found. Sometimes you get told the offer is all there is. Sometimes you get a compromise. Rarely do you get the asking.
You can always ask for more $ with more responsibilities.

Well the only way I can justify what I make or should make is by comparing to what others in the field have made.
I don't repeat anyone particular salary. Mechanics salaries in commision is typically open news but hourly is a little different.
I simply tell him that we both know I'm worth more than 16.25 there is a .75 cent differential that I feel should not be included in my salary because its a differential for working night shift.

I agree on that also. Your negotiating your pay rate. The $.75 is additional you get paid to work the shift nobody wants. So if they offer you $17/hr thats your base pay, then add the $.75/hr. Thats only fair.
its amazing how cheap bosses can be. $1/hr is only about $2K a year more. Thats not a big deal!

Yea I know, big deal to me but to them its absolutely nothing.
Well my boss came at me today and was like "Glen I'm really sorry but we've been really busy and I haven't been able to talk to John (Think V.P. of company). I'll talk to him tomorrow" Which I replied, " I won't be here tomorrow, I got stuff I need to do".
I'll be looking for a new job till I get the phone call.
I had to keep two of our MAJOR contracts from walking tonight because Day Shift/Managers ain't doing their jobs. Both contracts from now on said they would come to me and me only. Heh I dunno if that'll be the case because people say stuff all the time but they took my managers number and one even called on the spot and left a message because my manager was out. Saying that if it wasn't for me he'd leave and take his contract and burn it.
So uh yea :) , I think I'll get what I want, if not I've pretty much decided I'll do something else and just take the last few contracts they have.
Unfortunately we lost our biggest contract (over 200 vehicles) before I even started and they're freaking out because everyone is upset about the way things are ran.
Its not even that their mad about repairs entirely. Its the fact that they drop their truck off at 9am and come back at 5pm to get it and I have ABSOLUTELY no idea that their truck is even on the lot because day shift didn't say shit. I'm like well lets see if it got fixed and I'll find out it didn't get touched at all and neither did anything else for that matter.
