You will rarely find a intel dual core with hyper threading unless you get some intel xeons. Hyper threading is basically a term with Intel. It is widely found in Pentium 4’s. When you have this hyper-threading supported on a Pentium 4 it will take a single Pentium 4 core and make it seem as if it is 2 cores even though its actually only one core. Other then that you’re only going to get an increase in threads ie multi-threading.

Choosing Intel over AMD or AMD over Intel, is like somebody saying windows (Microsoft crapistic corp.) is better then linux, or a mac is better then a pc, it’s all a bunch of mumble, jumble, BS. It doesn’t matter what cpu you get (Intel/AMD) they all are going to run hot if you don’t take the proper cooling measures. It also depends on how you treat it, If you treat it like $hit then it will run like $hit, if you take care of it, well of course its going to run better. I have never had a problem with any of my intel cpu’s over heating or even amd cpu’s over heating.

I can tell you right now that the Intel core 2 duo’s are quite fast. They are a bit faster then AMDs dual core, I have also tested AMDs dual core and know for a fact there just as good. You throw intel/amd in a system with some raid 0/1 (min. 2 hdds) support on there hdds and you have a mighty fast pc w/ disk performance. Even better yet throw the new quad core into the mix and it’s just flat out sweet.

Either way Intel or AMD dual core is the way to go, you won’t be disappoint.

I swear by AMD mostly because of overheating issues and reliability. My current computer is going on seven years old and still working fine. Slow as shit, but it never fails. When I built it, it was top of the line, now you can't find parts for it.

I also swear by Newegg, I don't care what the price is. While I was in Korea, I was building computers for friends over there. I had an order of at least $1k get lost in the mail. I sent newegg a copy of the invoice and they sent me out a new shipment. The other one never did come in. No hastle at all. I won't shop anywhere else. A friend of mine in Korea had bought a MB from tigerdirect, supposedly brand new. When he got it, it was obvious it wasn't brand new, but tigerdirect wouldn't exchange it or anything. Hopefully their customer service has improved since then.

hopefully my comp lasts until next year. I'll build a new one then. Mostly it's just a file server now. My wife and I both use laptops mostly. I still play games on it though cause the laptop just can't keep up.

Anyway, AMD and Newegg FTW!!!

What do you guys intend to use this computer for? it looks like a pretty stout system you've got planned out.

Yeah we need more info.

"Airforceyooper" I too only buy from newegg. I have yet to have any draw backs with them. They are the best for computer parts. I too and still running well actually I just retired it, I had it running strong and it was quite, slooowwww..as well.....got it in 99 and retired it about a year ago. The thing that sucks about pcs is that the day you buy/build your pc is the day it became outdated. Theres always going to be greater and better stuff out there.

yup. That's why I try not to overbuild. Why spend big bucks on something now that you're not going to use. If you're going to use it down the road, wait six months and save 50% on it.

In Jared's case, I'd be willing to be they're overbuilding. The first thing I'd do is probably get rid of the 5200+ chip and buy the smallest chip that will work on that board. 3500 or so, whatever, I'm not sure. Anyway, that will cut down a lot on the price. As for audio, I've always been plenty happy with the built in audio card. Video is another matter. Ram is important, but that can be done strategically as well. Anyway, we'll see what he's got to say.

my Athalon 3800 is soooo out dated but it still runs really fast plus im overclocking that sucker with some software that my brother gave me. so it runs well... mine is about 3-4 years old running well.. the problem is that you can replace HD, CD Drives, RAM, Fans and video/sound cards but where it really bites u in the ass is the damn Motherboards and CPU's... They are always modifying them... oh well... BTW New egg is where i buy everything when i really need it quick, plus their return policy is pretty good as well

I think I'm running a 2800 Athalon in my PC. I can't wait to build a new machine. I think Civ IV is killing it. lol
