and im not really sure what i would want to do, cause i know im a long ways away from competing. just building a competition system keeps sounding more and more tempting..

either way you go... you're still lookin at some funds to do it and as you already stated... you need to upgrade that alt first, then probably wires (big 3 if you haven't already done it), possibly second battery... then the list goes on and on pending the direction you wanna go... honestly I think you'd be better off going the ways of SPL do to the fact that it's obvious that you like big BASS what with already having the 18"s... just callin it as I see it... and if that's the way you decide... hit up Bill (bwcad1) and don't hesitate to ask from yours truly

You should start by learning everything you can about sound, speakers, amps, the car environment etc before you start going gung ho on competing. Many people don't realize the complexity and amount of work it takes to put something worthwhile together.
I also disagree with cargodz on your system not being good enough for SQ. Practically any system is "good enough" for SQ as long as you do a good job on the install. Maybe you can't turn it up much without distortion or you might need an equalizer to really smooth out the response, but I think you can get decent SQ out of most equipment. Of course, better equipment always makes getting good sound that much easier :)

yeah i like alot fo bass for something but then i turn it all the way down for somethings. since i have a wide variety of music i listen to im constantly playing with the little built in equalizer. i mean i obviously dont want the 18s bump away to my willie nelson cd, but when i pop in some trance or hip hop i set the subs at -2 on the headunit.

and solacedagony. about the distortion and stuff, playing cds i have never gotten distortion, ive never tried cranking the thing all the way up, because obviously im ognna get distortion out of that, but my volume goes from 0-40, and at 30 it sounds really clean. never tried turning it past that.

the only time i get any distortion is when listening to the radio, and due to that im gonna say i prolly just got bad reception.

i used to build custom harleys, so the majority of my thought process is how things look. putting 18s in was more of just a how custom can i do it idea.

Did you ever find out exactly what amps you have? If you could find a web page that has their specs, or if you could post them here it would go a long way towards us giving you some help getting you the best bang for your buck. Basically need to know the continuous(not max) power output of each channel into 4 ohms. A detailed list of your speakers(model #'s) and how they're hooked up to the amp(s) would help too.

I wanted to help you figure out how much airspace those boxes have, but I think you're going to have to "remeasure" them. 22"x26"x17"x16" just doesn't go with your pics:

Try again. Need to know the width and height of the baffle(the face the sub is mounted on), the length of the back of each box, and the shorter length of the front.

no i couldnt find anything on the amps. someone on here found them on ebay, made by a company called fish or shark or something, but it didnt give any details.
the speakers arent hooked up to an amp theyre run directly off the head unit, theyre loud enough i didnt bother running the amp to them.
