here is what i would do.
since its an explorer a CRX box is what you want.

2 BTL or hifonics olympus 15's (if you can get 8 cubes per sub)
1 BTL or hifonics olympus 18 ( for around 6 cubes)
4 aero ports
1 hifonics goliath or 2 hifonics hercules
1 excessive amperage 300 amp alt
2 stinger 2150s
2 runs of 1/0
and call me for your box.

Will you be going to comps at all, or do you just want a loud daily system?

I have a small problem with the whole "hits hard as hell but has good sq..."

I am sorry, you either go for one or the other. SQ is as much component installation and tuning and as little subwoofer, whereas, SPL is as much subwoofer and box and as little component installation and tuning.

It sounds like you want a hard hitting subwoofer...with ton's of power. Just about any subwoofer will do you justice, just tone down the bass when you want to listen to more music rather than bass.

As for what you would need, I am the SQ go to guy of sorts, so I can't really help you, but Bill is the SPL stud as well as a few others here. If you want to get really loud, I would spend more on installation (wiring, electrical, and box) and less on subwoofers and amps. A good amp that Michael (Cargodz) or Terry (Smoker) can recommend, with the right subwoofer will hardly break the bank, but spend money strengthening your electrical system in your car. Cause if you blow that up, I guarantee you it will be much more expensive than just a sub or even an amp. Don't even get me started on troubleshooting the problem....shoot....

Everyone now is talking about the electrical system.....

that was the first thing i talked about in my post on the first page!!!!!!!!!

I'd reccommend a big excessive amperage alt. You could possibly do dual alts if you know someone who can fab that up, but otherwise, i know Nate makes some 300+amp alts for most vehicles. And make sure the big3 is upgraded when the new alt is in.
Your going to want a nicer battery up front atleast... Optima, Deka, Kinitek, Odyssey, and the list goes on and on. Then you will need a good amount of 1/0... a few runs atleast. Probably 2 batteries in the back would be sufficient also. This right here is the most important thing in a system!!
