newbie needs help!!!

Post by jeff the chef »

i know this is gonna get some ppl angry becuz im gonna sound like such a newbie...

i have an 03 bmw 325xi with the harman kardon system but im looking to beef up the bass a bit...i was thinking about getting either two (10 inch) Alpine SWR-1042Ds or twp (12 inch) Infinity Reference 1242W..[im getting the infinity subs for $180 less than the alpines]..but recently someone told me that two subs would be too much and it wont sound good, is this true?? would one sub be enough?? also, my cousin, who is going to install my system, was talking about "bridging" the subs to the amp..he told me to get a 2 channel amp between 600 and 1000 watts...does this make sense to anyone?? am i going to need additional accessories such as a capacitor, or additional battery?? sry if i sound really lame, i dont know what im talking about at all. do any of you have any suggestions of other subs? which brands are reliable and durable?

ps - im looking for sound quality...not just loudness....and my budget is close to $600

thank you in advance

If you're looking for sq (sound quality) and don't want to overwhelm then I would go with the Infinity Reference and put them in a properly sized sealed enclosure... Those mated with an amp that does 500-600wrms should add some nice beat to your system.
And as far as your charging system goes... don't worry about the capacitor... your car comes with a 120amp alternator which is more than enough to handle that little bit of power draw.
I would however recommend you upgrade the Big 3 (Motor to Chassis Ground, Alternator to Battery Positive, and Battery Negative to Chassis Ground)... A decent 4 gauge wire should work perfect for that with your additions... side note: on the grounds make sure you have a solid ground (frame or firewall) and clean away any paint for a good connection :)

Don't ever worry about the questions... that's what we're here for ;)

All honesty, only one sub will be fine for a sq system. out of the all the top cars at finals this year, the guys that won, had only one sub. Buy one sub, whichever to your liking, that way you are saving some money, then use the saved money to help out with better wiring or better connectors or better speaker cable or better something. Just remember, two subs are not always better than one.

I compete solely with one subwoofer, and have never lost a show.

I would just say to go with a class D single channel amp. You get increased distortion when you bridge an amp, and I highly doubt you'll notice the difference between class A/B and D anyway. You'll also decrease the electrical load on your car because of class D's efficiency.
