Do i want 2ohm or 4ohm sub with this amp?

Post by npcout »

Im getting a kicker 05S12L5 from my cousin for very cheap. He is also getting me the matching box that they sold at circuit city, the vented enclosure. My question is with the ohms.

My amp is a Power Acoustik 980 Watt 2 Channel 560RMS at 2 ohms bridged. I may replaced that with a JBL Mono 600.1 2ohm Amp. Which Kicker Sub do i want, the 4 ohm or 2 ohm model to give me the best and loudest hardest sound.

Thanks a lot for any help! Looking forward to setting this up! It will be better than what i have now.

Are you sure that Power Acoustik can handle 2ohm bridged. I would have to say it can only handle 4ohm bridged in which case you want a dual 2ohm sub. If you upgrade the amp, you are going to need a dual 4ohm sub to get the most out of the amp. My suggestion would be to decide on which amp you are actually going to run and get the sub to match the amp.

Out of curiousity, what made you decide to go with the L5 over the cvr's??

my opinion would be to go with a dual 4 ohm and run it on the jbl @ 2 ohms. If you havnt bought it yet, i would do some serious research on different subs, l5's and l7's arent as good as the're cracked up to be

I picked the L5 over the CVR's because i listened to both at circuit city and liked the L5 a little bit more. And also, it was a lot cheaper, and if i got the CVR's they were refurbished (sp) where as the l5 is new.

Alright i saw that your right, bridged its min impediance is 4ohms. This amp puts out 560RMS bridged and really pounds hard. Do you think i should go with the JBL, or stay with this one? Will i notice a huge difference?

actually, you will probably not be able to notice a difference in how loud it will be. You will be comparing 560rms(if that is its rms power) and 600rms, which will sound just about the same. You need to double the watts to get a 3db gain, or a good noticable difference. The only difference would be is the quality of the amps. Power Acoustik isnt trash, but isnt not what a JBL is, but they are pretty good for what you pay for them. JBL on the other hand are pretty well built amps and it will for sure last you.

After reading what you said the first time i looked some stuff up. My power acoustik amp pushes very hard. The car audio store that installed it told me they have previously installed a few of these and they pound a lot harder than it is said to, and i beleive that. It draws a lot of current with 4X25 fuses, so i had to put a 100amp circuit breaker up front and have been fine.

I looked up some reviews on that jbl amp quick online, and i read a lot about how bad the amp was, always shutting down, overheating quickly etc.

So therefore, im going to stick with the power acoustik amp, i love it now, so im sure it will be fine. http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_6198.html Thats the specs, can you just double check it, and make sure of what sub i should get. The 2ohm or 4ohm. That would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot!

Get the Dual 2ohm if you are sticking with the Power Acoustik.

Im kind of lost here because somebody else told me this about it, (Same question i asked here)

"For a single sub, you'd want a 4 ohm driver."

For the Power Acoustik amp, it does most power at 4ohms(both channels bridged). So you want a sub that will present a 4ohm load to the amp to get most power out of it. There are 2 ways of getting this, a single 4ohm sub, or a dual 2ohm sub wired in series to make a 4ohm load.

a 4 ohm driver is what you use to mount the speaker to the box.... :happy055:
