Which enclosure should i use?

Post by ghostman337 »

Im looking to put a 12" infininty reference 1242W in my pathfinder. Here are the specs:
Qts - 0.480
Vas(ft3) - 3.48
Fs - 24.23
Re - 1.85
Xmax(in) - 0.5
Qms - 6.63
Qes - 0.52
BL - 9.76
Sd(in2) - 82.46
I thinking about putting sub in a ported box - i listen to mostly rap & rock and i want to really feel those deep bass notes. Is it true that ported boxes are better for this type of music? Would this sub sound good in a ported enclosure? Any ideas on box/port size and firing direction? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hmm.
Sub seems better oriented to a sealed box (low Fs, not so low Qes/Qts).

Ported boxes or sealed boxes can be better, depending on your tastes and preferences. If you are looking to make the ground crack beneath the truck - then ported will be better. But sealed boxes have the edge on clarity, and could even have the edge on upper bass response (where impact is perceived), such as you find with most rock kickdrums.

For box firing - read this:
http://www.installer.com/tech/aiming.html
(to sum up - it's the relative location in your interior, not direction, that matters)

For box size and tuning, you are simply bound by Hoffman's Iron Law, which states that the following three items are mutually exclusive in any sub/enclosure combo - you control which of them to trade off, to gain you in the other areas, through your box design: ;)
1) small enclosure size (compact box)
2) low frequency extension (low bass)
3) high efficiency (loudness)

Want loudness without needing to buy a 500w amp? Build a bigger box.
Want it to fit in a small space? Build a tiny box, but be prepared to feed it tons of power to even get moderately loud.
Want it to play extremely low bass? Tune it low, or make the box build, and expect that it won't win any SPL contests.

You are in control.

infinity reference are made for sealed enclosures, yes. they're also very cheap and entry level subs, and entirely not good for rap and high output.
they're pretty weak subs really.

when you only want to spend $40 each for subs though that's pretty much what ya get.

Any suggestion on subs that are good for rap? I looking for dual voice coil (want to run one speaker at 2 ohms) that take about 300 - 400 watts rms?

ah FI Q12 would work well, and is well well within your price range.
http://www.fiaudio.com if I recall, is the site.
these subs are designed by scott atwell, formerly of RE.

I had a pair of Infinity reference 1242s a long time ago and I have to agree, the subs were a waste of money. definitely nowhere near the quality of the kappa perfects. If you are going to keep the sub, sealed is the way to go, though. Ive heard some good things about ascendant audio on this forum, maybe you should take a look at the assassins. of course, I am not exactly "speaker savvy" so take my opinion with a grain of salt lol.

Sell them off and take what little cash you get from them and add it to saving up for better sub(s). :thumbsup
