I am looking to replace my Deck and all 4 Speakers in my car. In the front I have 2 5 1/4" speakers in the dash, and in the rear I have 2 6x9's. Now I am sorta confused on what speakers to get. From what I seen most decks you buy only go up to about 55w x 4 with the avg of 17-22 watt rms. Now the speakers I am seeing are like 300 - 480 watts and handle alot higher RMS then the deck can put out. I don't want to go crazy buying an amp and the such, but I do want to get a nice sounds set of speakers that will pump out some tunes.
How do I determine what speakers won't be too powerful for a deck that I purchase? Can anyone make some reccomendations? or point me in the right direction where I can get some more info on the subject? thank you in advance.

With a statement like that you might be looking at some low quality speakers that rate their peak rating on the box. most 6x9's or 5 1/4's will be under 100 watts rms. If I were you I would look into some Arc Audio kar series speakers. The 5 1/4s were 20 watts rms, and my sister has some Arc audio kar 6x9's and they are in the 50-70 rms range I believe. Now the speakers I am seeing are like 300 - 480 watts and handle alot higher RMS then the deck can put out.
But if I were you I would look into buying an amp for your speakers. They will sound 10000 times better. You will thank yourself later. You can get a 4 channel amp for pretty cheap, it wont be the best quality if you get the cheaper one, but as long as it puts out 50-70 rms per channel you should be fine.

Thanks for the reply's. The 6x9's I was looking at were the PIONEER TS-A6991R. If I remember correctly they handle form 2-80 watts rms, 460 watts max 5 way speakers. I heard the model below these at best buy and those sounded pretty great, so I am assuming these prob will sound even better. Anyone have any opinions on these?
I really didn't look into 5 1/4's too much yet, but here is also a problem I have. I would love to get an Amp, but I have a mini van, a 91 grand voyager. The middle seat is gone and I only have the rear seat in. So basically there is no coverage anywear in the car, it all open. So if I stick an amp in there I am basically asking for my car to get broken into (especially in my neighborhood).
The deck I was looking into also was a pioneer it was like $130 bucks 50w x 4 MOSFET with 22 watts rms. Seemed like a decent deck with all the trimmings.

Well I work for a contractor so i'm sure making something out of plywood or something won;t be a problem. I don't understand what you meant by subflooring, if you coudl explain a bit more would be appreciative.
I also had a question about the front dash speakers, the 5 1/4, from what I see most of them I seeing are 2 way speakers, rarley any 3 way or more. Now aren't 3 way speakers better then 2 way speakers? I not sure, if anyone could enlighten me on the this would be helpful.
Also if I decide to go with an amp, does it matter now what deck I get? I mena if I get a deck that say 45w x4 with less rms it really won't matter cause of the amp? or am I wrong on this?

Usually when i see 3way speakers that arent components, they have like a super tweeter added to them. So, they really arent true 3ways because true 3ways are a midbass, mid, and tweeter. 2way coaxials would be perfectly fine to get. If you are going to be using an amp, the thing on the HU you want to look at is the preout voltage. Just about every HU has a preout voltage of 2v or higher. 2v is sufficient, but if you can get 4v, 5v, or higher, it will provide with a slighty stronger and cleaner signal. The lower the voltage, the higher you have to set your gain on your amp too.

By subflooring I mean make another floor above the original with supports, this way you can hide your amps under it and know one will ever see them, but like I said originally...just make sure you allow for some ventilation so your amps don't overheat.
If you like you can even get imaginative and put hinges on it for easy access to the amps.
