HI!!
some may remember me from the other forum but I like this place better.
Anyway I was reading a thread a few threads down about the MTX sub. Well the last post linked to here: http://www.realmofexcursion.com/beta_videos.html
Watching some of those videos I wonder this:
Either videos distort the sounds of a speaker or the subs in the videos were pushed way past their limits.
That made me think, What gives a sub its different SQ quality?? What determines that and what is different in a SQ sub then a SPL sub to make one or the other??
Thanks for the help!

most of those videos are done with an amateur DVcam or similar, not a studio grade film camera with a boom mic and pre-amp set up to handle the volume and range those systems are putting out.
Thus, as you surmised, the distortion is from the cheap DVcam mic, and not the system itself.
Think of it like trying to advertise an HDTV on a little 13" black and white set in a commercial, or hearing an ad for a stereo shop on your factory 1977 Datsun car stereo.. can't do it justice.
as for a sub's SQ, that's determined by aspects like how responsive the sub is, how detailed or clear the sub is, particularly at high output, and the frequency extension and response curve as well as a few other more obscure factors.
What determines how well the sub performs reeally boils down to construction quality and the amount of R&D put into the product on the drawing boards.
SPL subs are meant strictly for high SPL output, and not designed to sound good or be musical as a primary goal. These are high excursion, high power speakers with a singular purpose of being as loud as they can be. RE's MT subs and the Kicker Solo-X are examples of this.

I have been reading through http://www.bcae1.com/ slowly but since time isn't my friend it takes me awhile to read that much information.
Thanks Kiki for the answers! :s_thumbup
