Choosing The Right Subwoofer

If you're looking for loud 8's..a pair of Audioque LW 8's would suit you nicely. Made from the same buildhouse as DD, so you know what they're about.

i would say the RE8's for the price or soundsplinter 8" i got 2 that im building into a centerconsole for my GF and i built a test box and they are pretty awsome. im gonna make it ported 1 cube for 2 8"s and im going to try and get it as low as i can hopefully around 35 hz but maybe 38hz

like i said man the jl audiio w3v2 8's are a lil expensive but my opinion is that they are worth every penny

I don't understand the resoning behind judging performance based on price... Specially if you are not in tune with speaker contruction & different methods of implementing a drivers motor.

Here is my recommendation... Peerless 8" 830491 Woofer.

I would be willing to bet anyone, that none of the aformentioned subs will compare to the Peerless in response & distortion levels. If anyone is willing to take the bet I will buy the Peerless & the other party buy their fav 8" we'll send it in for a free speaker test & see the results... (The JL w7 is out of the question)

If you know anything about the elements that constitute a good motor, you would be more concerned with its details than price...

Just my .02 ... genuinly trying to help...

i wouldnt take that bet raul knows his stuff. the ss is a great sub but i dont know if it can beat that peerless

idk i'm pretty confadent in myself and im not gone choose that jlaudio even though it is a very good sub i mean it is good but that peerless is better....but im confadent

Raul, basing the worth of a sub on it's cost has merit to a point, as long as that isn't your only criterium.
R&D, materials, etc all cost money. The more you put into the development and build quality of any driver, the more it's going to cost.
Better materials cost more money. Depending on the driver, this can be especially true. Tweeters are a good example, if you look at some of the best tweeters, they tend to be in the three or four digit range each.

The RE line of subs are great if you want something that really performs well for under a hundred bucks. If you have more to spend, I'd go with fewer, higher end subs myself instead of more, lower end subs.. but that's me.

As for speaker distortion, speakers produce by far more distortion than any other component of an audio system, quite often ranging upwards of 50% distortion, so comparing any speaker based on distortion isn't really a good idea.

I do agree that the motor topology and overall specs on the driver matter most of all, but how many people here really have that firm of an understanding of driver design to put that information to good use? you, me, Jon, and about 3 or 4 others perhaps on this site? Note, that's an abnormally high percentage of the typical demographic as well. I'd be surprised if I had one really knowledgeable person walk into my store every two weeks when I was doing sales and installing.

I would be amused to see that Peerless tested against a XXX using the XBL2 motor though, since the XXX has outlandishly good linearity at high excursion, and offers a terrific BL to boot.. efficiency not withstanding.
