The post on the back of the alternator cannot support current greater than what 4ga wire can. If you use 1/0 wire the Bolt on the back of the alt will become in effect a resistor and get extremely hot to the point of melting. Use 4 Gage and you will be fine. This not only comes from personal experience but from Ohio gen and Nate from excessive.

See thats what I needed to know. I was thinking I had read to just use 4 gauge.

So you dont think I would even need a second battery.

Hey bud, I aint gonna argue with you about it. Im just glad I got people like you who really know, to learn from. :thumbsup

Your probably close to about 1200 watts total. Put a good aftermarket battery in the car and see how it does. You dont seem like the type to play music for hours on end so just add another small battery if needed and you should be fine

Bill, care to explain your reasoning on not using 1/0 awg wire on the alt?

My cousin runs his BXI200.1 off the stock alternator and wiring, it does fine (durango). He's planning on doing the big 3 and upgrading the main battery asap though.

I did read that, but I meant maybe in lehmans terms.

It just seems odd to me that some companies would send their alternators with an 1/0awg ring terminal connected to them if they didn't want you to use 1/0awg wire.

I don't really know how to explain it any simpler. the bolt on the back of the alternator can only support so much current, if you exceed that amount of current for long periods of time they will get hot and melt the internal components in the alternator. I'm most cases you will be fine because your not going to be pulling that much current for a long length of time. I just choose to air on the side of caution. On the same token 4ga wire will support lots of current for short periods of time and has more surface area to decrease any heat build up the bolt doesn't.

If you need a further explanation call ohio gen and speak with them about it. They have been building alts far longer than most of these other company's like excessive or irragi or whoever.
